IMHO, yes it would be a better option.
The donor car is already a 3S & it already has the 4WD gearbox (just auto).
Unfortunately, the car I was talking about has now disappeared from Ebay
I think the point that's being made is that too people nowadays have some kind of pipe dream & instead of actually researching it (eg sticking your head under your AE82 with a tape measure, then finding an AE95 & comparing), randoms just post up LWIFOTI and what usually ends being really stupid ideas (yours isn't BTW, just extremely difficult). It's much better to try to research something by pretending the internet doesn't exist to start with. You'll figure out things that work/don't work & you'll learn a lot along the way. I think you'll find most of the die hard type people on here started doing this kind of thing before the internet really took hold, so it's not like you're attempting anything new with thinking about doing stuff, its just that we use the internet to assist in finding out doing things, rather that it being the way to find out how to do it.
You'll find that if you'd done a bit of research & then posted, you could've said something like:
I've been investigating this idea of converting my AE82 to 4wd using the running gear from an AE95.
I think I need to change .... & do ...., but I'm not sure if I've missed anything & how difficult it may be, and is it worthwhile?
Reads like you've actually looked into it unlike some wannabe & you'll get even better considered responses than what you did.

Thats a sports sedan.
I was going to do that to a Daihatsu Handivan/Mira at one point, add 200mm of track either side as well. Rear mounted 3SGTE.

We did this just for an IRS conversion -
Not to mention cutting the firewall out and replacing with another one that was set back and larger. Probably a similar level of work to the 4WD version but I didn't care about track width or running massive flares, legality is also a lot easier in NZ than Oz and I had an ex panelbeater doing all the work.

Interesting thoughts....
does anybody know how the ae93 liftback measures axle to axle with the import ae92 sedan? Did every ae92/3 have the same wheelbase, with only differant bodies? I think this has been discussed here before involving the hatchback, but cant find the thread though. The hatch looks shorter than the other variants, but i got off work early and have already had a few.![]()
Cos geez... an ae92 liftback, 20v turbo with awd would be a fun lil thing. Or is it just me?
Oh, and im lazy and very un-rich. Will let ya'll know when the lotto win comes in. Then the plan will be in motion.

not planning this, not paying for this, but willing to receive critisism for this. lol.

Wheelbase isn't an issue. It's easy to get a tailshaft lengthened or shortened.
It's track width that'd be more critical.
I knew some people in Brisbane that installed Subaru brumby running gear (suspension, engine, gearbox, the works) into a Subaru sherpa for use as a grass circuit competitor.
The inside of the wheels were outboard of the body (then covered with flares) & the radiator needed to go into the backseat.
If you want to see some real radical AWD conversion, look up European Ice-racers, and I think khanacross (race at circuit, but have gravel sections) racers.
Mid mount engines, 4wd, 4ws, tube chassis, carbon fibre bodies. Think modern day Group B rally cars gone mental.
There'll be some shown in the new Top Gear series that's just started on TV.
Hmmmmm....
Ive got a mint running brumby in my front yard....

Trust me, it's worth more as a Brumby.
I wouldn't expect anything less than complete removal of the rear section of the floorpan and installation of the rear section of the floorpan from a 4WD car, along with all the suspension and driveline components.
If you think and engine conversion is hard, this is a complete and utter headfk.
I couldn't see it costing less than $10k.
Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....
