There was a thread with a whole bunch of anime torrents (initial D, and a few others i think) in it which i did report at the time, and nothing was done. I've no idea if it still exists.

It would be stupid for the club to go down because of something stupid like that, people need to think of the potential repercussions of their actions posting things like this, having this all go belly up from a simple suing would be a complete waste. There are plenty of torrent sites, why put anything like that here?

This should have been PM as it's just a conversation totally off topic. You have PM regarding your question.

    Hi,

I've heard you're a handsome devil Cool1, but I dunno if you're as handsome as the Hoff. I've heard your attractiveness rating is 800milliRonas. That's quite good.

    Anyway.... back OT....

Personally, as a club member, i don't think that this is the message that the club should be putting across, just the same as we don't condone illegal activities on the road (as stated on the blurb "legitimate motor sport events. No street racing etc.")

Now, i know im not the adjudicator of the forum, but i also know that there are some out there who have already objected to these threads, and so this thread is for Forum and Club members alike to express their views on the topic.

*note* Keep this thread civil. -rep will be applied for flaming, rude, or derogatary posts.
I know you posted this thread about club members' opinion and I'm not a club member but my opinion is that other peoples' opinions are pretty much irrelevant (not this thread as it's a good way to find out what people think) because the stance that the club has taken is that it does not condone any illegal activity and thus anything like that is against the rules.

    Here are my thoughts..
Personally with regards to Initial D I'm pretty much okay with downloading anime. Firstly, while nobody has secured the right to make the English version (eg. TokyoPop) then it is legal to download the Japanese version. I personally think that every anime dubbed in English is done really poorly, the voices are shitty and the story is often botched. Thus when you are downloading the Japanese version, the Japanese producer is not losing out because they don't receive anything when the show gets broadcasted here and whoever has the English rights to it well I want to see the Japanese version so it's not like I'm going to buy the English DVDs or watch it in English if it was ever on.
Also (maybe someone IT confirm this) but I was told that it's legal to use Microsoft Word etc. without a license as long as it's personal/educational/not for profit. I think that's a sign that even the big companies have decided that piracy is a part of life.
Also I was pretty young when people were using tapes so I wasn't socially aware but were people kicking up as big a fuss about people pirating tape casettes? What about movies that have been on television? Everyone tapes shit so is it okay if I go and download something that's been on telly heaps?
Just some stuff to think about

if that were true, then there would be hundreds of sites offereign FREE LEGAL copies of word and windows etc... but are there any? no

the reason they have educational/personal versions available is so you can buy them cheaper.

but as you said, your and other peoples opinions are irrelevant

as for tapes.... the taping of vic20 and C64 games was also considered piracy.

    Hi,

You have to have licensed copies of Microsoft products for DRP systems unless they're totally cold systems - which is very hard 'cos you gotta have your DRP stuff running so it can take the lastest changes of data.

For all that stuff use GPL , public domain software. It is free, it is open source and as long as you don't claim it to be yours, you can modify that how ever you want.
There was a recent debate in Telecom industries to buy all the copyright of entertainment industry and then they can police this over internet. It is a peace of cake for world telecom industry to take over multimedia industry and than give copyrighted access to viewers, like yahoo.com\videos. But apparantely entertainment industry is full of shit and you cannot track who stole idea from where and there is a big bitch fight within entertainment industry so the idea went in the bin.
But piracy, copyright are respectable laws and should be accepted and observed in every sphere of life. I am an ardent supporter of opensource and public domain software though.

managed to get back online.. sorry to elaborate further on my above post.. you cannot use office for free, that aint allowed, however Windows 98 is now a free install provided that you are running it on pentium 2 class hardware or less and that you are a benevolent organisation or non-profit. when i say pentium i mean pentium pro / pentium mmx / pentium 2. pentium 3 and above isnt permitted..

There are all sorts of grey areas, but from a club perspective (to bring it back on the topic) - its not worth worrying about english versions of this, spanish versions of that, versions of windows that are ok to use for free if you stand on your head, fart and sneeze simultaneously, etc..

Just don't post *any* of it, and we won't have problems

The problem that the MPAA etc came across is the whole problem of encryption. Basically in the inherent act of decoding something to view/use it ensures that the encryption is crackable. Point in case is every single piece of secured software out there.
