I think black is correct, I have one point more than you, and I don't even own a toyota.

No rep in OT is wise. I think it is the same as the forums i am on that dont award post count for OT - saves people whinging about 'whoring' and saves people who know nothing being perceived as 'gurus'.

    Nik

    Hi,

I get some rep for doing my job and closing down threads - especially the real dumb threads that started off nowhere and went downhill from there. Sometimes I get a PM asking why I close a thread - but with my 24hr timer such complaints have been drastically reduced.

Rep doesn't mean anything to me nor does the rep of others, you can generally get a feel for the quality of input from a person in the tech section after reading one or two sentences of their post. Also, given that there is input from so many knowledgeable people on this forum if someone gives dud or misleading info it's usually picked up on pretty quickly.

The only time I think rep gives me a clue about someone is when it's negative and then I know they are probably a flogbag

Forget about the rep, once you have got enough for access to the for sales and an avatar what more could you want?

    Hi,

I recently deleted a thread about some chick, who was demoted by the USAF (or something similar), 'cos she displayed herself in Playboy.

Sadly, the thread generated into a "show tits or ban" comments and some rep was awarded for such a pointless post.

This is the exact reason why I want rep in the NCD area to be removed. And please, bring on the new forum software so I can ban people for periods of time for stupid threads.

This is ostensibly a car thread, which focuses primarily in modifying your Toyota vehicle. It's not a general forum for crap and time wasting posts. Yes, we do have the NCD area, but it seems that people are regarding this as the outhouse section like the old forums, and we don't want to go there again.

If you want to look at tits and other stupid shit, then use Google and other search engines. Please don't use these forums for an outlet for your rank stupidity. Most of us don't want to see crap 'cos we can get it by searching the net ourselves.

I will be targeting this area of the NCD very heavily.

YLD-16L, i agree with not taking rep too seriously, as the longer you have been on the forums the higher your rep will be, not neccessarily because of the more you know. It can be a bit of a guide though, just not the be all and end all.

river, hear hear. I have to be careful opening posts on twincam.org at work, some of the stuff on there would get me instantly banned from the computers at work. If people want porn, google porn, don't use a car enthusiasts forums.

why not just make rep reasons available for EVERYONE to read?

for instance make it so that anyone can view all the people that gave (or took) rep from me and their reasons why.

i think this would be a much better way to police rep becuase then it would be obvious as to who gets rep for stupid reasons, and therefore who is to be taken seriously when it comes to technical knowledge, and people would discourage others from giving them rep points for stupid reasons.

alternatively, people would just use the search feature to find a post in the tech section to apply rep to, for a post or comment in the NCD threads....

I know I am a toymods newbie, far from a big contributor, definately don't want to blow a tyre on the applecart...

    ...But...

It seems that this rep stuff is more trouble than it is worth? If it is really an important tool for for sale threads and what not, can you make rep. only visible in someones user profile - so the public fame of green squares is less sort after.

    Cheers,
    Nik

Sorry sir you do not have enough green squares to make a valuable contribution to this conversation

I think you all take rep too seriously, but it has served its purpose and served it well, reduce the retard headcount.

Ive done custom hacks for vBulletin my self and one problem with it is upgrades, while its VERY simple to hack in the sort of changes you guys want, it breaks upgrades. Which is fine if you want to recode them every time there is a VB upgrade.

Considering the widespread use of VB lagging behind with the upgrades is not generally something you want to do if any exploits are released. (As such is a problem with another forum I'm involved in which has lots of custom code hacks)
