oil coolers - options

I dont use an inline thermostat on the race car, figure it doesnt get driven sedately enough for that.

On the road car ill use an inline, probably bought from Summit. One of the best places to get the fittings from too IMHO.

^^^that all seems a little bit too much fo a head f***k with waterlines and what not. plus one of the reasons why im getting an oil cooler is because the radiator was under too much stress without it at the track, so i dont really want to rely on water cooling too much.

bill whats your take on the 3sgte oil/water coolers. i was planning on using one on my car but there seems to be some people that bag their effectivness out.

You'll need to make a long retainer for it, or maybe fit a 3SGTE unit instead.

I know the 2zz in the Sportivo comes with a oil-to-water cooler like that. Not sure if the ZZT231 does too. Its the same thing 'TRD' offers for the 2zz. Toyota don't change the filter mounting threads between engines do they?

ntp dash adaptors? any more details? the earls thermostat was on summitracing so you might want to check there.

ahhh decisions decisions, someone just approcached me with an alternative kit which looks much better than that ebay one. i have to decide betweem a 19 row and 30 row!

NPT, just another thread pitch standard (USA).
I guess with a 30 row you can block part off if it is over cooling.

went to price up a thermostat today...earls in-line oil thermostat $275 fuck that idea haha.

just did a quick search online and came up with this B&M example for $94 USD shipped ($111 AUD)

$275! I paid half that a couple years back
I've also used the B&M/Perma-cool thermostat, never had problems with it.

I'd say it depends on what it's being used for, and how much water flow you get through it.
Since they're designed for a two litre turbo engine they should provide reasonable cooling for anything with less power than that. I think the WRX one is a better thing though.

They usually don't, and a lot of that kind of thing fits a heap of different engines. It's pretty convenient.

The water plumbing isn't too hard to do, you just need to do a bit of machining, etc. As for the radiator being marginal, well that's a problem.

You shouldnt be measuring the oil temp as it leaves the cooler anyway. Well you can but its a spurious reading. I would be measuring the oil temps in the sump, preferably just before the pickup.

I've installed a Mocal thermostatically controlled adapter.


The brass "T" fitting is for my engine management system(temp shut down), it isn't in the pan, but it is in the line heading OUT to the cooler so it should be representative of temps in the pan

RX7 oil cooler has inbuilt thermostat, and are fairly cheap?

The Perma cool inline oil thermostat is only about $80 or so, may be a good option as well.

On a side note does anyone know what temperature the rx7 oil coolers open up at? I have been considering get an oil cooler and it seems like a good option but just need to find one.

yea think we might been ringing around and cheapest I have found so far is $110, so may have to grab that, just thinking if I can then just use the standard 4age oil cooler plate to connect it up
