Vote 1+ for the understated LS1. More power adn torque than the 1UZ, more common swap, easier parts and tuning, etc etc. I'm know i'm going to get flamed here... but on a factory tune the 1UZ has worse fuel economy.
If you want something different, go a 1UZ, but having driven both stock... I can tell you that the bragging rights of 4 cams, 32 valves and 8000rpm do not make up for the shove in the back of the 5.7L. An N/A 1UZ in a VS would be quite uninspiring.
If you're going turbo, then completely different story.

reliability, V8 burble and enough tourque to tow my jetski and my soarer a couple of times a year is all im chasing
ive had a good run with 1UZ's with the celsiors I have had...thats why im sticking with that decision
plus the LS1 purchase is about double the cost of the 1UZ

i reckon do it. the shifter and exhaust etc. will be able to be sorted once it's in. do you know someone with a motor and 'box you could sling in the bay to see how it all fits ?
and for the people on about how wonderful the 5L is, please don't delude yourselves. in standard form, ( yes i understand there is a well trodden upgrade path. ) they wouldn't pull the skin off a custard.
and the LS1 is pretty good, but still a bit dear. or so it seems to me anyway. my experience with the 1UZ has been that it goes pretty good and is fairly economical. also smooth as.

Even though i'd suggest just getting a cheapo 3.8 for $300 or so since it's your daily, but since you want something different, how about a Supercharged 3.8, Put in a 10 PSI Pulley and HSV XU-6 Chip.
modifying those 3.8 motors should be illegal...punishable by death

put a 1X in it. cheap, simple, bolts in and plugs in. no hassles

re the shifter; i would graft in a toyota a340e shifter assembly. that way the ratio is right and the R->P throw is already 1.5 more then the other shift distances.

My only concern (and you may have already thought about it) is the diff ratio. There is a big difference between a factory 1UZ ratio and the Commodore ratio which is likely to impact your end result. Can be fixed of course but it may add to your budget.
