If it has a solid axle front end it has leaf springs
If it is IFS it will have torsion bars
Basically most hiluxs up to about 95-96 with no IFS
Hey all, does anyone know what year 4x4 hilux has front and rear leaf springs? i know most have torsion bar front, rear leaf...but at some stage they had front and rear leafs didnt they?
cheers

they only went ifs 1997+
so most pre 1997 units will have a live axle and leaves in the front.
Correct.
All lux's up to 96 had live axle / leaf combo. 97 can go either way depending on early or late, and model type. 97 / 98 brought in the new shape, and all went IFS.
All single and dual cabs didn't change to IFS until the new shape in late 97, but the extra cabs are the ones which got the IFS earlier, though not sure on date.
Someone else may have to confirm when it comes to the 4 runners, as i think they got the IFS sooner than the lux's.
I would suggest the model that ran from 89 to 96, as they are a bit nicer / have better components than the earlier models, and easier to find in SR5 trim with the LSD. They are a bit pricier though, up to about 10k for a good reasonably low k diesel one, with petrols being significantly cheaper. Ones with munted engines are still quite cheap though.
SR5 89 on were IFS.
Cheers Case
i think surf's were all ifs too?
just looking at an older one with leaves to lift the bejus out of and fit a blown 1uz into...

yes surfs were ifs although i have an odd feeling you could get ifs with coils in the front of surfs as opposed to the ifs with torsion bars in the front of luxs
confusing...so many farken variations!!

hahah you havent even got one yet !!!
start comparing how many different bloody engine variations they got. currently we get 3 different engines in the new lux. (4cyl petrol,. 4cyl diesel, 6 petrol) then add three cabin combos onto that, plus tray options,
actually go back a few years we got four, 4p, 6p, 4d , 4td ( and the diesel ones were different family not just na/t of the same block)
the list keeps getting bigger.
i wish they still just chucked live axles in the front or gave an option. ive got a 98 ifs and would love live front end. i guess ill just have to get a cruiser![]()
from 89 to 96 only the sr5 had ifs all others were leaf sprung. cheers big wad
look at the model numbers
ln61 = IFS
ln107 = IFS (i think what you are calling SR5s)
ln60 = leaf front
ln106 = leaf front
then after that (ln167, kzn165) they all IFS
