4age distributor 4 wire vs 3 wire

Hi all,

Long time lurker first time poster.

I bought an ae86 recently which was half way through an engine swap from 4ac to 4age small port.

I'm still finishing the wiring but i'm pretty sure everything is correct (12v to coil, injectors etc with ignition on) however it still wont start.

Today I have just discovered there are 4 wires going from the ECU to the distributor BUT the distributor only has 3 wires coming off it (I think it might be a bigport dizzy or something).

Is there any way I can get the 3 wire dizzy to work or do I need to hunt down the 4 wire one?

If I do need the 4 wire one any suggestions on the best place to get one would also be welcomed.

3 wire dizzy has a 24 tooth home and 4 tooth reference so it won't run a sequential injection setup.

the 4 wire has a 24 tooth home and single tooth refence but it has 2 sensors on the reference so it reads every 360* and knows exactly where tdc No1 is.

You would have to get the right dizzy to suit whatever ecu you have, just check partnumbers on toyodiy.com

yes you should be able to use the 4 wire dizzy
Instead of using 2 sensor on the 4 tooth wheel, you will only use the one.

If u open up the ecu and see what pins the shielded harness goes to it should be
"ne" this wire goes to the 24 tooth wheel sensor.
"g1" this goes to the 4 tooth sensor"
"g-" is the sensor ground (both sensors share a ground)

thats about it.
just make sure you line up your engine to TDC and the one tooth lines up with the sensor.

4 wire dizzy only runs 1 tooth at the top.

3 wire runs 4 teeth and it only does batch fire as its not sure where No1 is.

well in that case just grind off 3 teeth so you only have one tooth for TDC

nope, as it still wont give you a tdc No4 reference (or 180* out on the dizzy)

If you added another sensor you could do it but for all the hard work you would be better off finding a stock 4 wire

Correct,
3 wire dist has a 24 pulse and a 4 pulse, so only 2 sensors, and an earth wire
4 wire dist has a 24 pulse and a 1 pulse and another 1 pulse, so 3 sensors and and earth wire.

and FYI
smallport 16v $AGE, 4AGZE, 20V, later 3SGTE + more, all have the same signal outputs.
