    Default Engine Decisions.

Ok....I have a ST185 and was coming home from a mates house down the freeway on monday night and went to overtake someone and noticed the engine making a clacky sound....thought...hmm...thats not right and pulled off into a servo and had a listen under the hood....gave it a rev and yep, sounds very much like piston slap, knocking pretty bad......limped her home, got more worse starting sounding like I was driving some old diesel......next day got it checked and yep its pretty much a cracked piston land......so yer driving a hire car at the moment.

Oh well leaves me with a few options.......

    1. Rebuild this engine with forged internals and rods...blah blah.

    2. Get another low K's Gen 2 3SGTE.

    3. Get a ST205 Halfcut......KYP have one there for $4800...dunno if they can still get me just the motor like last time......or

    4. KYP have a ST215 Halfcut that is a manual trans version with 60,000ks for $4000

Really undecided what to do.....the conversions me and a friend will do.....rebuilding, well I'll get that done properly........what you guys reckon?

If it was me i'll do a rebuild but that st215 halfcut is tempting. keep in mind 3s in the st215 is higher comp engine.

I would assume a rebuild would cost roughly the same or a bit more than the conversion (depending what you get done) although with a rebuild its like starting fresh and if done properly should last longer and be stronger to take more punishment/higher boost than the other opions.

With a conversion you may not know the history of the engine and if it was looked after or thrashed etc. But then again a newer more modern engine is always nice and usually more fuel efficient

Personally, I'd go with the bolt-in option of the newer engine, as long as it'll work seamlessly with all your other gear that's already on the car. I've had a few rebuilds done, and had friends who've had them done, and for whatever reason, they don't seem to last as well as a factory engine, and never seem as smooth. It's very hard to find a good engine shop, and if it's not right the first time, it's a huge hassle to get it out, get it apart again, and try and prove that it was their doing.

I wouldnt get another gen2, either rebuild or upgrade

keeping in mind if you go with the gen3 or gen4 engine you will need to get an aftermarket ecu.

This would need to be transported, but it's a bargain!

Damn right you can use a 3S GTE. And you can take me for a ride in it afterwards too Tristan's a good guy, have a chat to him...if you want the power upgrade, I think the GTE is the way to go for sure...it'll give you some serious punch!
