surely someone has done this or has a service manual & can check?
borrowed a car. drove it once. timing belt went. this kinda thing could only happen to me, so anyway i'm stuck fixing it.
turn engine to piston #1 tdc on compression stroke
support engine
undo front engine mount
remove ps/alt/ac belts
remove crank pulley
remove plastic timing cover(s)
remove what is left of old belt
remove old tensioner
fit new tensioner
fit new belt
refit cases
refit crank pulley
refit ps/alt/ac belts
refit mount
profit???
anything i'm missing?

pretty much it, by memory I think the water pump pulley has to come off as well

water pump pulley has to come off to get at the tensioner bolts. Bit hard at times to stop the bloody water pump pulley turning. Got two of the four bolts off, then had to resort to my pipe chain wrench to hold the thing in place, worked a treat.
double check timming when covers are off, but new belt is on, ive done a hundred billion timming belts and i still do this every time.
edit: sorry by check timming i mean turn over engine twice and recheck timming marks.
cheers sam.
Turbo flutter. : Its like a burp and a hiccup at the same time.
theres one bolt for the timing covers, behind the a/c bracket.........have fun getting to it!, and dont bother putting it back in,......... besides that one bolt its easy,
ahhh i forgot about that bolt, if you have a 1/4 socket set with a uni joint you will be ok, it is still no fun but doable.
cheers

I'd forgotten that one too. 10mm from memory, I left it off too. I used one of those sockets on a spanner handle to get at it, the car I did the timing belt on had a snap on 10mm spanner/socket in it. I almost squeeed when I saw it, was worth almost half what I paid for the car.
Hearing about that bolt gives me the one and only instance where I could have been appreciative for not having AC in my ae92![]()

Driving a 93 323 with no a/c, I'll take the skinned knuckles and 1 1/4 hrs it took me to figure out the best way to get that bastard off over no A/C in summer !
I'm just about to embark on this journey myself this coming weekend. Oh and there is also 2 timing belts for it. One is a square tooth style while the other is a round tooth style I found out.![]()

ill ask the dum question is a 4afc the carbied version of a 4afe. my brothers young bloke broke the timming belt in his ae94 injected, would the valves have hit the pistons or will they be ok? and i can just replace the timming belt in it. cheers dion

you can get lucky with these motors,...thro a new belt on it and see if it starts, ive had a few come in with snapped belts, and so far they've all been ok afterwards,
