The internal cavity is at equal pressure anyway. I guess at the end of the day it makes no difference. Either way will have the same effect so whatever is easiest or your preference will do.

What is so restrictive with the GZE Inlet manifold? Is it the throttle body or the diameter of the runners?

    20kw is a huge gain.

The throttle body is a restriction, fixed by the installation of a 3SGTE throttle body.
The intake runners are atrocious, especially the runner for cyl 1, it has a major dogleg. I'm planning on fitting a 4AGE smallport manifold to mine to help flow.

    Is this with all GZE's?
How much do 3sgte throttle bodies go for?

No. 2 is pretty bad aswell. The entry into the head isn't even radiused (No. 1 has some radius) it's more like a mitre joint
Well, that's on the big port manifolds.

Same for the small ports. I don't know how much the throttle bodies are worth, I got mine ages ago.

Sounds like the Number one mod to do on 4a-gze's. Were the inlet manifolds improved on the later 4a-gze's or would any gze benefit from a ge intake manifold and throttle body?

No benefit from any GZE manifold, although there is a piece that can be ground out of the inlet side of the bigport 4AGZE manifold. If you open it up, you'll see what I mean.

As for fitting a 4AGE manifold, I think there would be a decent benefit. Anything that will improve the flow of the intake, will improve power. I'll be doing it for when the SC14 goes in my car, but I'll be keeping the throttle body before the supercharger. You just have to make a top bracket to hold the supercharger in place.

The pre-supercharger inlet is stupid restrictive. Anything and everything should be done to improve the flow to the supercharger.
Why people try and get the SC to pump more air without improving the air delivery to the SC 1st, is a complete mystery to me .

The pipe between the throttle body and supercharger isn't too bad. There's not much you can do with it though, there's no room....
The pre-throttle body pipe is horrible though.
If you go to the 3SGTE throttle body, you can get rid of it though, like mine.

Also, the exit pipe from the supercharger to the stock intercooler is pretty stuffed too. Replacing the straight bit with some 2.25" pipe will be beneficial.

If the cast aluminium pipework that bolts directle to the SC is the same quallity as the pipe the TB bolts to, then the internal surface is as smooth as gravel road. Smoothing that out 'should' improve flow into the SC.
The other advantage of smoothing the internal pipe work is that it then has less surface area. So it should have less contact with the internal air flow and less opportunity to conduct external heat to the air.
If you can reduce the number of bends before the SC (3 x 90*), that would improve the air delivery, but it's not exactly practicle .

The pipe is big enough that the roughness won't be the biggest restriction, although it could help if you're chasing the last bit of flow. Radiusing the ends of the pipes may help as well.

Those three 90 deg bends are indeed a pain. You can't even make the pipe bigger due to the clearance with the block.

Sounds interesting, would like to see some dyno results of this swap.

If anybody wants to do some playing, I've got a bigport intake manifold floating around out the front. Can also organise to get it cleaned + ceramic coated, I've got mine done and I have a feeling it should make some decent gains.
The above opinion is just that - my opinion. It is not shared by any business that I am currently or have previously been involved with, nor any of their employee's.

Once I get my power drop issue fixed I'll get some dyno runs done. Hopefully my SC14 will be installed in the next few weeks.
