Default R154 will not select Reverse

    Hey guys,
I just recently finished a jzx90 half cut conversion into another Cressida. Took it for a drive and it drives great only problem is the R154 will not select reverse. The box is actually out of a JZA70. I have tried a different stick to see if that makes a difference with no luck. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be before i go and take the box out???? Could it be something simple that i'm missing??? It doesn't even feel like there is a reverse gear there. There is no clunking or grinding or anything it just wont select it. It seems to select 5th and drive fine in 5th. I know it uses the same selecter lever as reverse. Thanks guys,
    Cheers.

Yeah mate tried all the usual tricks, push down, pull up, pumping the clutch. tried putting it in 1st or 5th. tried rolling the car while trying to select it. also have tried holding it on reverse and slowly lifting the clutch up. it doesnt sound like reverse is even there no grinding or anything.

Can you get reverse with the engine off?

Are you sure the clutch is disengaging fully?

There is a mechanical interlock which prevents shifting into reverse from 5th gear, maybe jammed?

    hey mate,
nah i cant get it with the motor off either. I assume the clutch is working properly as every other gear is smooth and its not as if the clutch is working on the floor.
As for the mechanical interlock im unsure about??? Thats inside the box or the extension housing???

It sounds as if the gearstick actually moves over & down to the reverse position ( but no reverse ) if this is the case & it definately is going all the way over & down, it doesn't sound good .. Could be a smashed reverse idler etc ...

Drop the gearbox oil out of it into a clean container & look for some chunky pieces ..

Yeah mate when compared to my other manual it feels like the stick is moving the same amount. The gearbox oil is only 5 days old and as the car has only been round the block im not sure it would of picked anything up as it was probably a previous problem. But i think ill try dropping the oil anyways just incase it has managed to pick up any signs of chunky bits!!!!!

Probably a broken fork if the stick moves fully/ positively into position, yet there is no 'reverse'.
I hope it doesn't slide & try to get into reverse when driving & in any other gear.
    Good luck.

    Yeah thanks mate,
But would i be right in saying if it was a broken fork i would not be able to pull it out of 5th??? Because 5th and reverse are on the same selector fork!!!

    Hey,
Does anybody know exactly what the reverse restrict pin does on the side of the box???
Does it apply pressure against the shift into reverse or does it stop it from jumping out of reverse once its in, or does it just simply centre the gear so you cant overtravel it???

I pressume you are talking about the detent ball / pin. as you have already said its just a locater on the selector shaft, stops it from falling out of gear, but certainly wont stop it from jumping out ..

So are you sure the gear is even on the shaft? It all sounds very strange and maybe reverse was renoved for repair or replacement and was never put back in prior to sale? I know bugger all about gearboxes and don't even know if what I said above is actually possible, but it seems certian you will have to pull the box out.

What do you guys think he should do about the box not selecting reverse i only bought it about 3 months ago!!!

Well it can't hurt to take it around there and show him the issue and then politely ask if he knows what's wrong or how to fix it or if it was ina driving car previously. I hate taking shit back though because they always say it was fine when it left them! It would be funny to hear them say that and then find out there is no 5th gear in it all.
