Update: I should have a quote on the billet thrust bearing and retainer by Thursday and the shift forks by Friday.

Shift forks maybe a bit over the estimate due to the complexity of the design of the 1-2 fork. Installing the shift forks is an easy DIY if you know how to seperate a gearbox. Instructions here: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Librar....aspx?S=MT&P=1

Very easy to DIY with basic hand tools. Some older R154's had a T45 torx socket instead of an allen socket to hold the ball and spring in place, but still the same concept to take apart and put back together.

A thrust bearing and retainer install does require the use of either Toyota SST tools (imposible to get) or some improvised gear pullers and a hydro press.

Shifer forks are the same for all R154 geaboxes

I've pushed over 400rwkw of 7M thru my R 154 but been sympathetic with it so it hasn't broken yet.

I always thought it was the 2 > 3 shift that did the thrust washer in.

While my car is off the road I have been considering giving my gearbox a freshen up, so this is apt timing, exactly how much will you be looking at for the relevant bits to give my R 154 a chance at not self destructing?

I'd like to be able to take my car to the strip and get a few passes out of it if we ever have a drag strip again and not have to sweep up the bits from the gearbox off the start line lol

To register your interest, please EMAIL me as im starting a database.
I will need the following info emailed to [email protected]

    Mobile Number:
Parts: ie: Billet Bearing Retainer + Thrust Washer + 1-2 Shifter fork + 3-4 Shifter Fork

Requiem (quake lol) - Very very interesting thread. The box that I pulled apart had a layer of redline shock proof on 1/4 of the syncrho. I thought it was paint, but it was redline gear oil. Ill get some photos and post them up soon.

im pretty sure ppg already make billet selector forks - wonder if they compatible with original gearsets - might be worth a phonecall

Anyone had any experience with the OS Giken Gearset in the R 154? I had one but never got round to installing it, and I have the opportunity to buy it back still new and unused.....

I've looked into the OS gearset for the R154 and in my opinion, its not worth it unless you race the car regularly on a circuit that requires a taller 1st / 2nd gear. ie: a short tight circuit with heaps of hairpins etc.

Stock 3rd is virtually the same as the OS set with a minor RPM difference.

For drag racing and outright acceleration - the stock ratios will be quicker to 0-100km/h and 1/4 mile time. For most circuit racing, the stock gearset would be still great. You can tame the stock box with the shorter 1-2 gears by using a V8 ratio diff which is 3.9 instead of 4.1 in the TTs.

    Code:
    Gear Ratios
    Stock OS
    3.483 2.701
    2.015	1.614
    1.391	1.215
    1.000	1.000
    0.806	0.806
Unfortunately no dual synchro conversion is available - its a real PITA to convert as you need custom clutches and hubs machined up as well as collars. You're better off getting a factory dual synchro box and converting it which has its own issues too!

As far as outright gear strength, I cannot assume that the OS set is better than the R154 or value for money if one needs pure gear strength.

    Ok great news guys,

PPG Forks for 1-2 & 3-4 are $385 + GST each + Delivery to your door, but they may be out of stock. So for the complete 1-2 and 3-4 the price is $385 + $385 = $770 + Gst + Delivery (about $25) = ~$880 Delivered. They are made in Billet Steel and would be covered by a PPG warranty. It would take me approx 3-6 weeks to churn out my own set of forks and a lot of trial and error = $$ - so why not go for an off the shelf order and get it done and dusted with a warranty!

As a group buy, I may be able to get a cheaper price for 5 sets. We have a total of 5 people including myself registered for the forks and other billet parts.
    Ashlin, Piggy, JZA70 R, HKS_TRD + Me

Regarding the billet parts for the thrust washer, The australian quote has to be cheaper than $340 AUD as we will be selling this set for $375 Delivered including GST - which is our cost price for the marlin crawler version.

So in total, the most that these upgrade parts should be is $375 + $880 = $1255 Delivered to your door including GST.

If you guys need a complete rebuild kit (bearings and synchros - genuine Toyota) I can supply these at $749 Delivered incuding GST.

As a whole package you will get BIllet Cro-Mo Bearing Retainer + Cro-Mo Thrust Washer + Steel Shifter Forks 1-2 & 3-4 + Genuine Toyota Bearings + Synchros - all Brand New for $1999 Delivered including GST.It should only take a gearbox speicalist 2-3hrs to install all the parts if the gearbox is on their bench.

If you want any of these parts, you can buy them individually from us so dont worry if you do not want the package. Just let me know what you are after via email!

Given the forecasted maximum prices in this post, can the interested parties contact me if they are still good to go ahead? A 50% deposit will be required to secure the order and the balance before delivery. I will do my best to get the parts cheaper if we can get the numbers up. Perhaps you can post on another forum or ask a friend if he is interested.

Single parts are OK - you dont have to buy the whole kit!

    Update on PPG forks
    "Hello,

We currently have nil stock and would need to manufacture these forks.
Realistic delivery would be 6-8 weeks.

    Regards
    Mark Hrgar
    Workshop Manager"

I dropped off my forks for quote in STEEL to the engineer - hopefully we can get something cheaper and quicker! Will keep every one updated in the thread.

The locking ring acts as a large washer between the bolts and the flywheel. The rectangle tabs are folded onto the hex shape of the bolt to stop it from vibrating loose.

Balancing would not be noticeably affected due to the symmetrical nature.
