It all depends on what you are looking for from the box. If u want a box with a new feel, recondition it, but if you are prepared to deal with a box that may well do the same thing in the near future, get another one from an importer.

I dunno what the cost of parts for R154's are from toyota, but it may well prove to be cheaper than getting one from an importer, since they charge so much for these boxes.

As far as strengthening the synchros... Not much you can do there.

To cut a long story short, if it was me, I'd reco the bugger.

a quote on repair would surely assist the decision making process.get the right person to strip the box down and see what it requires.could be good value to search the old site for this info also.I imagine you would replace the troublesome first gear thrust washer [is that the common failing part?] while it was apart.
cheers.Pete.ps I cant advise on who as havent used anyone.

I'd like to know too...about to recieve an R154 to slot into my mx83 and go drifting,,,,Would probably replace that washer first if anyone can give me some details.

I honestly dont think that i would root a gearbox too quickly drifting.... What technique do you use 2DRFT?

Scandinavian flick is the way ...save on clutches, diffs and boxes!

Not quite so relevant, but i hope you are handy with a sledge hammer. Because the R154 doesnt fit directly.

sorry to break it too you bowls club boy but you cant scandanavian flick every single corner on a racetrack...youre gonna have to clutch kick and use the handbrake/pop clutch at some stage if you want to be able to successfully slide a full track...

Its a common fact that drift is harsh on gearboxes and diffs, but not as harsh on things like your motor and and brakes (compared to hardcore circuit racing) so if you want to partake in such a sport you better deal with the fact that youre most likely going to be breaking a gearbox here and there...unless you go for a PPG item...but not all of us have $7000 to spend on just a box

that said, the R154 certainly is tough and has so far stood up to six months of punishment from me, on and off the track, now im interested too see how it holds with the 300+ rwkw and twin plate im about to feed through it...

Ahh okay Mr1j....As you can see...not much experience on track here, mostly learnt car control on dirt motorkhanas/khanacross lol...i'll see how long all my gear lasts. You can be a guinea pig to see how long your extreme twin plate lasts!

Thanks but I knew that Takai, found a japanese guide with where to hit and such. Did you reply to that private message i sent you? It told me you did but i cant find your message.

If someone can direct me to where and what to replace (1st gear thrust washer) i might be able to run off a few in 4140 for people and have them properly heat treated and/or case hardened.

    Cheers,
