Well, it changed f*cking fast, and some near flat shifting too... But just didnt get it on the limiter to see if it was going to start playing games

Isnt RLSP the wrong thing to use? But the Redline manaul trans fluid infact the correct thing?

At my old work we used the shock proof in single gear boat gearboxes, It was awesome in that regard, operating temps of box dropped dramatically and vibrations dulled. I dont think its designed for synchro's tho.

Depends on who you talk to, what you read and what you want to believe.

Ill tell you its good oil that will cure notchy shifting in R154's. There are probably several other oils out there that will do so too, but i havent tried them.

Ive been using it in my R154 supra with great results for 5 years now.

+1 for the lightweight shockproof. It cured the crunchy shifts mine had.

In 1978 Rover introduced a new manual box for the SD series, specified 75-90 oil, this was a pig of a box to shift untill it warmed up,They never bothered to re-engineer the box, but after a couple of years they decided the box would work better if it was filled with ATF instead, Mobil early Ford type. ( I think this is a thicker brew than Dextron) this transformed shifting, basically the same box was used in all the V8 range( even Discoveries right up untill BMW took over and dropped the old engines)
From about 1982 Rover specified Early Ford ATF in all the manual boxes
I owned half a dozen of these, and the difference in shifting just with the change to ATF was magic,
Thought I'd try it in a R154, like Rovers It seems to like the new taste, been running it for 8 months, smooth easy changes and 4 litres Mobil early Ford ATF costs under $30.
This is in a daily driver ,no track running.
    Works for me.

toyota also recomend using ATF in there 86-94 toyota celica/ camry manual boxes i did this to my st162 (when i had it) and i noticed a massive differeance from using a valvoline manual gearbox oil to then swapping over to an ATF

Sorry for the dig. Swapped over from RLSP to the Early ford ATF suggested here chasing SOME shifting improvement as the RLSP did SFA. Result; totally shit, EVEN notchier. After about an hour of highway cruising it was almost impossible to engage gears. I added the remaining 1l of leftover RLSP just to get a semi decent shifting experience. Conclusion; maybe good on other boxes, R154? no.

I'll be trying the VMX80 and thinking of trying the nulon gear box additive, in hte next week or so when I have time.

Haha damn went backwards. Will be interesting to see how the VMX80 goes for you as it sounds like your box is a bit unhappy.

I suppose I can also add some more news, on the 5th year of running RL LW SP i took the old girl down to the drags on a set of slicks, was told not to count on driving home again.

several 1.7 sixty foots and 5000rpm clutch dumps on mickey thompson slicks, a 12.45 @ 111mph and the box has never felt better. Drove home and its still as smooth as it was 5 years ago when i first put the smurf piss in.

Sounds like your BOX might be shagged!! Have your tried RL MTL??

I don't think the box is shagged, I think it is a case of the wrong fluid for the box. With the original fluid (what ever the fk that was) and the RLSP it was ok - it was just a truck box like always. My previous ma60 had a w58 that was a dream to shift. I'm just chasing something smother. I'd try the MTL but 3 weeks of daily driving in my car is probably about a year worth of driving. VMX80 and additive - If thats no good then I'll try the MTL next significant service.

    On talk about the R154...

How fragile is that thrust washer?
    Anyone smashed one?

Is it worth replacing with an aftermarket item while the gearbox is out?
