Correct. I have extractors on my AE82 and I was able to get it out by simply undoing the slave cylinder and moving it out of the way. I didn't even need to take the heat shield off the starter.

I did need to apply a bit of common sense & logic, though, in rotating the starter around to the best position before trying to get it out. Probably depends partly on the design of your extractors, and partly on how well you think it out.

Also if the car didn't have air conditioning I could probably have pulled it out that side even easier! I also reckon with the dizzy and oil filter off you'd go pretty close that way as well.

So, does anyone have a pic of these magical mystical starter motors?

    Cheers for that.

I have attached a picture of the 'normal' starter and the reduction starter. The one on the car looks like the top one, the 'new' one I have looks like neither of them!

The starter I have was DEFINITELY taken off an AE82 bigport motor. I'll have to find out if it was at the front, or the back of the engine. If it was at the front then I guess I'm on a winner anyway, regardless of what it is...

Ok well this is not a picture of the ACTUAL new starter motor, but this is mostly what it looks like, with two large 'cylinders' mounted together, a gear that is only partly protruding from the end, and no 'snout' covering it.

bit of a thread dig here - but my starter motor is doing the same thing and its costing $260 to repair and replace.

The car runs great, except not being able to start it - like this morning on a main road, stalled the car and couldnt restart it.
Push started it on the main road - but real frustrated. :|
