Default 1g-gte into RA2* trans confusion.

    Greetings all,

Thanks to Guy for helping me get the proper engine mounts! Strangely, my mounts bolted right up without any need for modification. I thought I'd need to cut these? Now, I have a question about the transmission. I thought I had read somewhere that I needed to swap bell housings and use the W5* from the Celica? Of course after trying this and finding the bell housings are completely different although the transmissions seem very similar, I came home and checked the net. The 1G comes stock with the w58 so now I'm really confused. Am I completely off on this? I'm wondering if I'm thinking of information I read for a 7m conversion now.

I can't seem to find anything about changing transmissions on the forums or the web. I also can't find the walk-through file I used to have that if I remember correctly I downloaded from the old Toymods site. Does anyone have an active link to this file? It had pictures and pretty much an explanation for everything that needs to be done to get a 1G into the RA2*'s.

    Thanks,
    Joshua

Joshua, the manual gearbox behind a 1G-GTE is normally a W58.

W55,W57 and W58 all share the same bellhousing to gearbox bolt pattern regardless of bellhousing. The RA2x W5box is not similar to either of these other boxes.

The bellhousing you require to mount a W58 to a 1G-GTE is unique to the 1G-GTE, however the 3T-GT bellhousing will suffice, as the engine to bellhousing bolt pattern is identical to the 1G-GTE. The glitch is that the clutch slave cylinder on the 3T-GT bellhousing will be on the exhaust side when fitted to a 1G-GTE.

The gearbox crossmember simply requires an extension bar on each side, the centre hole will also need to be enlarged, for the adjustable stop to drop through.

    cheers Chuck.

ps, check the members ride threads and conversion threads, I am sure you will find the other info there.

    Hey Chuck,

Thanks for the heads up. I did look at some members conversions, but I really didn't see anything about changing transmissions. The biggest problem is sorting through the many many threads relating to this conversion! I guess there wasn't a lot of talk about transmission change because it's not required? The problem I had was that I thought I could/had to use the transmission from the RA2* and that it would bolt up to the bell housing that came with the 1G. This isn't the case, which means the transmission that was attached to my 22R isn't a W55, W57, or W58. I read that the W50 has a different bolt pattern and bell housing, so maybe that's what it is although that's not what the previous owner told me he had put in.

At any rate, I'll be putting the W58 back onto the 1G and see how it mounts up in the car shortly!

    Thanks,
    Joshua

yes, use the w58 and modify the original gearbox crossmembr (it bolts directly to the w58).....speedo cable will screw in directly aswell, wire up reverse light switch aswell,
