Can I ask what your plans are for the starter motor if you arn't cutting a chunk out of the block? Mounting it on the rear of the bellhousing? But then would need firewall mods?
Thanks
Joel
I'll be sharing bits and pieces, as there are a few ways to do it... I'll be looking to market a complete clutch/flywheel/bellhousing package as well as an inlet and possibly a turbo package as they are developed...
The quickest and easiest, but in my book, not best result, is to cut a chunk out of the side of the block to fit the starter on a 2S RWD bellhousing... The 2S doesn't use as many of the bolt holes as i'd like, and requires for at least one of them to be shaped out to get a bolt through it, plus I don't like cutting material out of the block...
Not only that, but I'm doing the package in such a way that it will mean that the only other parts needed to source will all be in a 1MZ front cut, meaning people won't need to run all over the country side to mix and match bits.
Anyways, back to the shed... gotta get the Vienta in this afternoon.
edit- Jezz, the inlet can be very nicely cut and shut, and will easily fit under bonnet... I'm looking at a couple of different aftermarket options... one of which will be independant throttle bodies. The customer I'm doing the initial conversion with is going for a twin turbo setup, so we'll be doing a low profile custom plenum for his.

Like I have said more times than I care to count, the 2S RWD bellhousing puts the starter motor in the passenger side bank of cylinders. The only way to use the 2S RWD bellhousing is if you place the starter motor in a parallel universe. I'm not aware of that technology being currently available so the adapter ring/ carving out the block webbing is the next best option.
I'll let this image do the talking.
The 1MZ flywheel doesn't quite fit in the 2S bellhousing and your parallel universe starter motor will engage the unmodified ring gear from the wrong side.
It's like no **** has the nouse to put one piece next to the other and go "WTF?" anymore. Do you seriously run a fucking workshop? I can only imagine it's sheltered.

i've been seriously contemplating a RWD 1MZFE setup for FI - mainly for NCOP regs as a 1UZ is too big for my car choice.
transmission choice for me is auto though for drag racing.
my trouble is i'm going to need a V8 pattern auto so the starter motor sits lower - i have a built 6cyl trimatic that'll put the starter around the exhaust valve position.....
so toyo autos appear to be out, like JZ autos etc - but i have though about using the FWD 1MZ auto bellhousing bolted to an A340E from a 1UZ and then beef that up.
A340Es go for a six pack of midstrength around here, so i'll just need to pick up a camry auto and see if they go together.
instead of messing around with clutch throws, why not look at a generic throwout bearing and bolt a manual to the auto bellhousing? of course, tha idea goes out the window if the FWD 1MZ auto has a cast-in bellhousing ala trimatic etc - prob should stick my head under a camry bonnet before musing in public....i hope you all understand why i have no desire to look under a camry bonnet anytime soon.
Sure, can use an auto bellhousing but you still need things like a starter motor to bolt up and engage with a ring gear - the block webbing precludes this from happening. That auto bellhousing then also needs to mate with a manual box. Now you introduce a second problem. Why would you do that?
There was a guy in Finland who fitted a 2VZ to an RT104. He used a redrilled C to W50 bellhousing and redrilled (!) an 18R flywheel to bolt to the back of the VZ. I haven't seen a C series motor in Aus but if you could source said bellhousing you might be in luck. He is an infrequent poster here, username "highcast", and he has a cardomain presence where he details his conversion.
Or you could just make an adaptor ring, use a 3VZE flywheel and starter motor, a Rav 4 clutch and just be done with. These are readily available items. There's no running across the country - flywheel, starter motor and adaptor ring are cheap and one-off purchases and the only consumable, the clutch, can be purchased cheaply at any auto parts store.

C-series = diesel found in imported Corollas etc, would obviously be a lot more common over in Europe. Pretty sure they ran S-series gearboxes (and rumours float around of the C-diesel being similar to an S-petrol) so the bellhousing off an S5x or something might suit as well.

So adaptor ring are you still selling these GT?

A couple people have asked me about these lately and I did make two. There was a smallish problem with one of the stud holes for the starter motor not being in the right spot (just meant I had to weld and redrill/tap the hole in the right spot) so I was a little reluctant to let them go out with that fault. As you can see from the original thread, it was a pretty agricultural looking bit of kit too.
I'm thinking I can do a bit better than that with V2. The mods I would consider would be to complete the ring (rather than leaving it as a horseshoe like the CRS stuff) and making up a small tin covering plate to cover the deficit at the front. I'd also smooth out some of the angles and obviously correct the starter motor stud thread.
I have given one of the originals to Joel - I know he has a 1MZ, is keen to get this up and running, has a track record of finishing what he starts and he's free to do with it as he pleases.
Source a 3VZE auto bellhousing from a 4WD auto transmission. This should put the starter motor in the right place although you will still have to carve out part of the 1MZ block.
Now I know nothing about 4WD transmissions but I just wonder if the 3VZE auto bellhousing might just bolt up to an A340. Then you just have to do something about about a flex plate (likely 3VZE) and torque converter - you'd be modifying this if you're dragging it anyway. You'll need to research this - autos are for fags and I'm not a HIV/AIDS help centre.
I'll provide lots of details regarding my way forward with it all..

cheers for the tip - much appreciated. A340E/341E are a pretty common tranny - it may just be possible.
i wonder if i could use a 1MZ flex plate....bit of playing around is in order methinks.
i like my manuals too - but not too much of a fan of flat shifting into third on full noise in a hilux at half track.
