i like my manuals too - but not too much of a fan of flat shifting into third on full noise in a hilux at half track.
Turns out 3VZE had A340H auto trans with integral transfer case...you might be lucky, the bellhousing just splits off and it all bolts together nicely with regular A340E stuff. 1MZ ring gear will face the wrong way...

Looks like it does...you just got lucky.

    wow - you're a champ GT - thanks a bunch for that.

    so a 3VZE (hilux 3.0 V6) bellhousing fits an A340 series tranny - incl RWD - because it HAS an A340 tranny....gold.

makes me wonder whether i should just use a 3VZFE instead of a 1MZFE - save the headache. although chances are i'd have to mill both blocks to clear a RWD starter. also maybe a 1UZFE flex plate...? they're scrap value. i'll check it out anyway.

there's talk on Lextreme.com about a clubman guy who put an adaptor plate between bellhousing and W5* 5 speed. if it works on a 1UZ / A340 i see no reason why it wouldn't work on a 1MZ / A340.

may be of some help for the manual guys...?

No issue with the VZ - the block is clear on the driver's side for a starter motor.

As for the auto bellhousing to W5x adaptor, yep could be done but then you'd need to lengthen the thrust bearing slide tube and use a fancy Tilton style central slave cylinders. My understanding is they don't have that much throw (about 15mm) so you'd have to get a pretty fancy clutch to go with it. Costs really start adding up.

What was kind of cool about my original premise was that you could use cheap, readily available items.

Some very interesting finding so far, especially the 3VZ auto bellhousing and a340 match..
Which means if you wanted to run a Tremec T56 gearbox, I already have an adaptor plate to suit. Mmmm, 6 speed 1mz

Don't forget that the 3VZ-E and 5VZ-FE (3.4L) were in the 4Runner/Hilux/Prado, so are already in RWD format.

Only the 3VZ-FE was the FWD Camry motor.

    They're good points Andrew.

you'd need an 1135kg car + to get a 3.4L turbo'd under NCOP regs though.

NA would still be fun though.

Hey all, few questions to see if anyone has tackled them yet.. I was thinking of starting new thread but this one is already getting some good info in it so thought should continue it..

1mz sump.... is designed for the engine to be on a lean.. Is there any other pan that bolts on, maybe a 3vz-e? Also a pickup that is designed for a engine not on a lean? Again maybe 3vz-e? If nothing is available I will modify 1mz stuff but thought there may be easier way.

Engine mounts... there is a mount on the block passenger side but nothing driver side.. Though on the block there is a distinct section that appears a mount could bolt to. Is there anything factory that bolts here?

EGR stuff... I will have to remove if any hope of fitting starter motor. Is it ok to remove all components including the part that bolts to the block and use blanking plates?

I think thats about it for now

Joel from memory the 1MZ has an alloy corset and a tin sump. I'd just modify the tin sump and extend the pick up. Could also look at a 3MZ sump - I have never seen one so no idea whether that would be helpful - it's also an E-W motor on a lean so I reckon not but worth having a look. Couldn't say whether a VZ sump would fit but very happy to take some measurements from my engine for you. The VZ is a more conventional tin sump (no alloy corset) Might just be a case of redrilling a lot of holes in the steel sump and Bob's your dad's brother.

With regard to engine mounting points, often there are unused/untapped dimples in the casting. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of the driver's side of the block?

I'd figure the EGR would be a straightforward reroute. Blanking plates are OK but the engineer mightn't be so OK with it. I might have mentioned this was going to be in the way of the starter in our PMs.

Also found my Allen key socket set over the weekend, soaked all the bolts in Penetrene and finally whipped it off yesterday so will post off the ring tomorrow. So sorry, just been so busy with work etc.

Yeah you are right regarding the sump, alloy corset and tin sump.. I thought 3vze may share same design but if not then i'll just modify the tin section myself.

I'll get a picture of the driver side block and post it tonight.. As it does appear to be the provision of an engine mount of sorts, 4 large tapped M12 bolt holes in similar area to passenger side, but very different pattern. May be something out there that bolts on..

    Awesome, very eagerly awaiting ring

Hey, your EGR seems to already have a blanking plate on it? On the driver side of the block, where you have a plate I have a god awful lot of pipes n sh1t.

When I was investigating the 1MZ stuff, I did notice there were at least three different arrangements of the EGR stuff.

Also, pink dots look like a good place to bolt a mount to. Also does anyone have an expanded drawing for the doover pointed to with the green arrow? I have a horrible feeling there is something under there that needs x amount of tension.

Anyways, quiet day at work so fishing trip yields a lot of carp and then a big fuckoff marlin.

    Fuckload of Camry manuals.

Would appear it's just an EGR warmer blanking plate - nothing exciting in there at all.
