I agree, recheck the headbolt torque after a few days driving, or a few heat up cool down cycles, I have found some of the bolts need to be retorqed and after that they stay where they should.

Also be careful when torqueing(sp) the bolts. make sure that the thread is clean because otherwise if there is some dirt in there it might take up some torque and it would not last as long. understand? My cousing was telling me that torque specs are now number of turns or something so that it is more exact.

My plan is to install a cometic MHG, using arp studs. Has anyone used these parts, without decking the block and has sucsess?

How should I clean up the block? I will get some gasket remover tomorrow, and what ever else people suggest. Cheers

    here here ^^^

cost of MHG etc you want it done right 1st time.

MHG doesnt allow for minor imperfections...their not forgiving as said.

apparantly toyota used the same torque setting for 7MGTE and 7MGE from factory, so the turbos, with more pressure, went bang, this is what i was told by my mechanic, although i wish i could gut him like a fish.

correct retorquing procedure is to back the bolt back off, retorque to setting, for me, 72 ft/lbs then another quarter turn :/

If I put a stock gasket on the car, using arp studs, to ~72ft-pound torque, do you think it will be fine running upto 14 psi boost?

It's damn annoying, I want it on the road, but I also want it to be bulletproof...

I used stock gasket and 72 ft/lbs and arp bolts, and my mechanic says 12psi safe limit...

any more and i think a metal one might be the way to go... i think the ct26 maxes out around 14psi anyway?

remember at like 11psi you hit either boost or fuel cut, or something...

studs have different torque values, NOT 72ft/lbs - look up the ARP site

and on stock (new) toyota bolts i wouldnt go beyond the 72.

as for the mechanics version of 'thats why they blow' - remind me how come so many cressidas have bhgs ?? no validity to that statement

something i vaguely remeber from a more experienced member (so don't quote me ), but i *think* the head studs are a better and stronger option than bolts????

there was an interesting article floating around about 2jzgte and 7mgte head bolt strengths some time ago...... could be a good read if

studs allow more even distribution of loads and hence more accurate torque settings.

also very useful if youre assembling/disassembling the heads regularly

I'm running a stock HG with ARP studs torqued to 80 pound and I ALWAYS run 16psi from a hi-flowed CT26, 3000 km and no sign of issues yet. Dont forget that you need to re-torque your bolts/studs after a few thousand km as well.

If you decide to go MHG it is definitely worth getting the block decked as well, but dont forget this necessitates removing the pistons etc (ie: the machining shop will want a blank block). The guys that are reporting MHG failures are probably victims of improperly prepared surfaces or not retorquing the gaskets. And nearly all MHG on the market are self annealing (except maybe ebay cheapies, dont know there), so dont use any type of gasket goo on them or for that matter on the toyota genuine graphite jobs, it stuffs them too.

Im going to go with the stock head gasket, ARP studs, And just clean the surface of the block up as best I can.

Save putting the metal head gasket on until I can afford a rebuild (tax time)

Cheers all, when im finished cleanind the block ill post the pic

I have used some CRC gasket remover on the block, this is what it looks like now, what can i use to clean it up a bit more? Emry cloth or something like that?
