Rob - I just had a flick through the manual and you're right - NO BLOODY WARNING. we should ccall and complain! give me a call when you get down here - im just around the corner from Albert Park so we should catch up

Joanthan Yee - the 7s, 9s etc are all to do with clearances etc from factory. As machines wear, items get mass produced sizes can of course vary. - the 7 + 9 together may also equal the same clearnaces as a set marked 4 + 6 for example, more than likely not but all combos have diff clearance specs.

now i know in these two rods have very similar markings on the join. it's either an M or W, but on the other 2 rods that i havent pulled out of my block the little M/W are orientated differently so not made by a machine.

i dont think the rods have been removed prior but i cant say for sure.

also there is a 6 on all the caps and the rods have a 7 on the same side. other side has 1 on the cap and either a B or a C on the rod. so that'll help get the cap orientated the right way.

also very informative thread. thanks for all the pro's that commented.

Those "N" stamps are factory matching marks. they should always match to complete the "N". Its like the DNA for rods

Rob, let me know when your keen to do this and i can talk you through the blue checking process or using measuring techniques to identify which caps belong with which rod. Please try and identify which 4 caps came from the engine first tho.

With a telescopic gauge, which can be bought very cheaply (depending on brand) from gasweld or similar places you/we should be able to use them inside the engine to measure the big ends to identify which caps belong were.

OR surely there is a felow toymodder local to you that you know that owns telescopic gauges, also known as snap gauges, anyone?

As said, let me know when your up for the task and i can talk you through the process. Only happy to help.
