'I've scrapped better.' John stated when asked about the car by the guy with the silver tipped cowboy boots!

I haven't read through the rest of this thread, but I've got this problem, tyres are cheap and it was visible when they did an "on-car" balance, ie jacked up the car and they had a little machine that spun the wheel up while still on the car, with strobe light. You could see that my tyres were out of round, giving me vibration at speeds above about 80. I'm soon to get new tyres, so hopefully i'll no longer have this issue..

If you can find any shops that do on car balancing (i'd never heard of it until i went to this place??) - then this might help. They spun the wheel up on the car to about 130..

Fitting spacers etc can amplify or make apparent any pre existing problems due to longer lever arm working back on the rack.

One vibration issue I have had with similar symptoms was in a corolla. Started at 80km and went away came back at higher speeds. Turned out to be sloppy tyre rod end. While driving we yanked the steering wheel violently to the left and it went away for a few seconds before returning. It was basically the wheel 'flapping' in and out on the freeplay in the rod end. Just another possibility.

A lot of good info in this thread!

haven't read thread, but could be a delaminating tyre

i spent ages chasing a vibration in my car, wheel balanced up at two different places fine, before i realised that as soon as i drove on it the thing was going out of balance again due to the tyre deforming

    Thanks.

    Hey dude,

In the end i believe the issue was with the 5MM slip on spacers i was using.
The tyres/work wheels were perfect condish, and as i thought , it was NEVER an "out-of-round" issue.

I have tested 5mm slip on spacers on my Z20 soarer, there is no issue there.
I then tested the 5mm slip ons on my Z10 soarer, which has the same design suspension setup as my GX81 Mark II / MX83 cressida. and the issues returned.

So thats about all the research ive done.

From having wobble on my Z10 since buying it, i ended up finding it was play in my Rack Ends and also OLD OLD tyres .

replaced tyres ($50 for some 80% 2nd handies)
replaced rack ends ($45ea x2 and 30min work each)

    and the issue has gone

    (1) I understand you did swap tyres but the delaminating tyres or steel belt failure does cause vibrations that are not apparent. I had the steel belt on 3 out of 5 tyres fail and one of those was on a tyre that was a replacement for the previous tyre that failed. They were replaced free of charge but I decided not to buy that brand again

    (2) I've purchased a number of egg shaped tyres that were also replaced free of charge.

    (3) The on-car balance can show up these problems because you can see the tyre diameter grow as its spun up to speed and some of the problems show up..
