Are u running a thermostat?
If not, perhaps it is contributing to the heat...
Under alot of load, the restriction of flow might be better because it will leave water in the radiator for longer to cool and enter the engine cooler...
yes i run a thermostat

im guessing you have tried just turning your heater on flat out and winding the window down![]()
lets think about that for a minute. 40 deg day, sitting in a metal box(car) in a fire proof suit with a helmet on. the last thing i will be doing is turning the heater on.Originally Posted by SL666
i appreciate your thinking, but thats not a very long term solution.
we are going to try the AU fans and see what happens, i have put the 72 deg thermostat in aswell which should help greatly i believe.

a thermostat on a 1J is completely necessary, as they actually close when they get hot, as opposed to opening like a conventional setup...can be a real PITA actuallyOriginally Posted by kwayzivietnamese

not long term no.. but would probably get you by in the mean time..i appreciate your thinking, but thats not a very long term solution.
does it overheat on the road at all? just seems odd that its only cooking after 11 seconds or so at full throttle.. the water in the radiator should be relatively cool, so when the thermostat opens it should remove the heat from the engine quite quickly..
on the dyno is there any issue? does it push any water into the overflow?
have you ever replaced the water pump? perhaps sufficient water flow at low revs is part of the issue?
car has never had a problem since taking hydrolic fan off if you read the initial post.
dyno, yes its getting hot
track, yes its getting hot
street, only driven it on the street once for 20 mins since putting the thermo on and it was driven with race fuel at 27psi 440 rwhp and got a flogging, what it does normal driving i dont know yet.

I read the initial post, and i agree that this issue has only happened since you took off the hydro fan.. however.. perhaps the superduper hydro fan was masking the issue?
looking at it from another direction....
you have plenty of radiator, the problem is happening while you are still driving the car, unlikely that even the hydro fan could pull the equivalent of 40 km/h or most fans ive seen in dyno setups.. let alone the airflow at the end of the drag strip..
i would suggest that perhaps while this issue has only happened since you removed the hydro fan, it may not be strictly caused by it.. did you remove the pump etc for it (can't remember what the belt setup is like)
i do however concede that you have a much better understanding of whats in the front of your car.. do you still have the air conditioning core in there?
air con core went at the same time, and the radiator was cleaned by a professional.
so the radiator should have more flow than before as it doesnt have the ac core to block it.

is there now a gap between the cooler and the radiator that wasn't there before? ive heard (not experienced) that air can tend to go around the radiator in cases like that.. but i would imagine it wouldn't make much difference if the radiator was still hard up against the rad support..
i'd consider venting the bonnet, not any FATF style ones.. just some small ones.. like on the evo lancers.. just behind the radiator.. might have to consider it if the factory style shrouded fans don't cut it..
and im guessing you are running just the standard water:coolant type mix..
i guess im just intrigued so much because we fully expected my 1j to cook its ass out.. and it doesn't.. its making a hell of a lot less power though.. so im looking at what i'll have to do when it starts to![]()

Do you have heat wrap/insulation around the exhaust/manifold/dump in the engine bay atm?
It does wonders!
