    Default Transmission Oil for JZA80

Finding out on behalf of my partner.

    He has a 2JZ-GTE 6 speed Supra.

Recently he had his car serviced and the mechanic replaced the transmission oil with transmission oil for an automatic. My partner is concerned that this may cause damage to the box.

Can you use automatic fluid for a manual box ? If not, what should he be using instead ?

This car is his baby and the cost of replacing a 6 speed box sends chills down my spine !

if he cant do his own servicing then im guessing its a stock engine (ie no upgrades, no boost increase etc?)

and he probably drives it like a nanna too so i would worry too much.

you will jsut have to pay a mechanic to replace it again since he doesnt know how to do ti himself

Alot of people with T56's in XR6 Turbos are running Castrol Transmax Z/Dextron III which is an auto gearbox fluid.

No sure about a V161 though.
    If in doubt power out

Some manual gearboxes (I think Camrys do it) do use ATF (automatic transmission fluid) for their gearbox oil, so it's not completely unheard-of. Whether or not this would be a good thing for a V160, I'll defer that answer to someone with more knowledge of Getrag and JZA80s.

appears transmax Z is ok which is probably what the mechanic used.

But plenty of people use all sorts and don't seem to have any immediate problems

Toyota Specify a D2 Auto Transmission fluid for the V160, thus it should have auto trans fluid.

Toyota also have "V160 Gear Oil" (don't know if still available though).

Yes, the V160 uses an ATF-style lubricant.. which is why it has such a small volume of fluid in it (compared to a regular chunky gbox).

if possibly, the toyota stuff is best.. some other types have been known to eat the seals on the V160, and $200 on lubricants is nothing compared to $2k+ on a rebuild (especially when you'll probably only change this stuff once or twice in the time you own the car).

Apparently the royal purple ATF stuff is meant to be ok for it too.

    Thanks for the replies guys.

Rona, I found the same link, but thought it wouldn't hurt to double check.

    What's with the attitude ?

He tends to do his own servicing, but been a bit busy with work, so it was easier to get a mechanic to do it.

    His Supra currently has:
    - Cusco front strut brace
    - Brembo front calipers
    - HKS FMIC
    - Apexi pod filter
    - Defi boost gauge
    - Defi Link control unit
    - Momo steering wheel
    - pair of Recaro SR3 seats
    - pair of Recaro Start R1 seats
    - Blitz SBC ID3
    - black SSR Professors at the front, silver VSKF at the rear
    - HKS Hipermax coilovers
    - old school aftermarket exhaust

Yeah, he drives this car like a nanna... handling just doesn't match up to his R32 GTR.

The 6 speed Supra runs a Getrag V160 or V161 gearbox.
Getrags are common in many Euopean vehicles (BMWs etc), Japanese vehicles (GTRs etc) and even locally in some Holdens.
Getrag apparently recommend Castrol Transmax Z (a high end automatic transmission fluid) for it and other similar gearboxes they design/manufacture.

When I was researching oils for my V160 some 4-5 years ago I came across some info posted online on a US Supra website about how an analysis had been done between Toyota V160/V161 ATF fluid and Castrol Transmax Z samples and they were apparently the same product just in different containers and with vastly different pricing.
I've been running Transmax Z in my V160 for over 4 years without any issues and the used fluid has been as expected when changed a couple of times.

The widely reported issue with the Supra 6 speed and non OEM oils was specifically with the use of certain Redline oils which caused the DU bush in the selector mechanism to swell up and jam in operation and required a subsequent partial gearbox rebuild to rectify.
