Auto Transmission Slipping in SV21 Wagon

well i've had this car for 1 week, and now the transmission is slipping.

First gear is fine, then it gets into second gear, and it just completely fucks itself. give it some gas, and you get lots of revs and no acceleration, gear does engage at around 4500 revs, but it doesnt go up a gear, stays in second. Also there is a rattle like noise when reving the engine, and u can feel the rattle in the acellerator as well.

Engine is the 3S-FE with the A140L tranny. The transmission was checked out before i took the car...

Also, Transmission Fluid is way too full as well, goes well past the "HOT" section when cold.

Is this heading towards "a new transmissoin" territory or could it be something simple ?

drain out some of that excess transmission fluid to start with..

then see what happens.. u could've flooded the gearbox, which is bad

if the transmission was checked out before u bought the car, what's going on now?? hmm

new box shouldn't be that expensive anyway, and if u're going down that way, do a manual conversion

i'm preparing for the worst case senario at the moment, i've sourced a tranny for $300. how much labour is involved to get this into the car ?

disconnect battery, transmission lines, wires, kickdown cables or anything associated to the transmission. then

1. remove wheels
2. undo struts..
3. pull out drive shafts (the longer side is a tricky one)
4. undo cross-member
5. undo transmission bolts to engine
6. transmission should come off with a bit of elbow grease.. make sure nothing is connected..
7. reverse the whole thing, install gearbox in.. yadda, bolt everything back up. yadda yaddda..

8. profit?????????

dun forget to mark the strut camber alignment markers b4 u take the strut apart.. and u might need to get a wheel alignment done... else should be around 150 - 200 for labour at a garage

For what it's worth,

If you're going to drain fluid it's probably a good idea to do a fluid & filter change while you're under there.

I did one on our camry (same as yours in a sedan)

Made the world of difference (ours was slipping on upshift) and the fluid was the colour of beer.Cost all of $15.95 for the filter & gasket and about $25 for the fluid.

Just a thought........

I've taken it to the mechanics, and its not overfull, infact its exactly perfectly on the mark. I checked it while in park, apparently u have to check it while its on drive. So thats one good sign.

The mechanic gave it a drive, and said its not slipping, its just not changing from gear one. and he says that it should not be something to worry about yet.

Not sure what the course of action is yet, he will give me a call.

i was told it was the Governor which i have NO idea what that is, and it cost $220 to fix it. Told me its due to driving the car to hard, or not completely stopping when changing from R to D or D to R.

For your info,

I've replaced the governor on a KA Ford Laser (Mazda 323 rebadged) before. On these cars, it is on top of the transmission casing. It's housed inside a cylinder a bit smaller than a coke can with 3 bolts holding it on.

When I removed it (the transmission was still in the car) it looked like a nylon device with a nylon gearwheel on the end of it. I only replaced it because a transmission mechanic told me that's what to look at. On inspection, the gear was all chewed and mangled.

The car was driving fine when cold, however when it got hot it would lose drive in all forward gears.

Not sure where it's located on the camry, if it's easily accessible it might be worth getting a price on the part as the on for the Laser was around $40.

Maybe someone else on this site knows where it's located?????

this is what was done.

- Check And Locate Fault
- Remove N/S C/V Shaft
- Dismantle side of Transmission
- remove and replace govener valve
- remove auto pan
- Service Automatic Transmission
- Adjust as required
- Reassemble with new gasket and oil
- On road performance test

seems reasonable to me

Good to see it's fixed.....

Now at least I'll know whats wrong if ours starts doing the same thing.
