Theres some info on the net about what conditions the solenoids need to be in for it to be in a certain gear.
Cant find the page right now.
Do you know the sequence?
So i was driving along, in my ute 1jz - a340e, slow down for some lights, take off, first gear only.. ... won't shift second, bump the shifter to second.. still only first..
so i manage to pull onto a side st, have a quick look, nothing falling off etc, try all the permutations, got reverse, got neutral, got park, 1-2-D all first...
so i couldn't disconnect the battery - no tools (thinking maybe the ECU needs a reset)
Check the fluid - seems ok, pink, and seems to be enough on the dipstick
so i unplug S1 (something i did for a dyno day a while back) then i have 3rd... so i don't understand how the hell i have 3rd..
1 = S1
2 = S1 + S2
3 = S2
4 = (none)
so now S2 is energised, but it wouldn't before?
WTF is going on?
any ideas?
(i've limped it back to work in 3rd, but i won't be able to do too much more till this afternoon)

Im pretty sure thats not it.
I think 2 and 3 is different something like s1 on s2 off and the reverse for the other gear.
unless the gearbox i was looking at was a different one to yours.
Pretty sure 2nd is both on, because if i lock second and disconnect S1 i get 3rd (normally before this latest 'development')
His order seems to match what I've got
Oh - i do have the check engine light connected, and it lights up on start up as per normal, but is not lighting up any other time.
The Soarer (and I assume others) use the O/D light to flash transmission codes
ahh, not sure i have that hooked up.
If i pull it to 1st/low i get second, and third any other time.
Have you got SP2 hooked up? I know you can drive without SP1 (but SP2 connected) but it doesn't shift properly (well that is with my case).Originally Posted by SL666
Did you change the sensor in the rear transmission extension housing? From a 4 pulse sensor to a 1 pulse sensor? If you did, then change it back to the original sensor and it should shift into all 4 gears...
Good luck and I do hope you find the solution.
I disconnected S1 to get the sucker home.. its done nearly 25K km setup the exact way it currently is.
When we had all sorts of trouble with the speed senders when we put it together, it definitely went limp home until we sorted that out, its not doing that now.
Okay.. so my ECU is energising both Solenoids.. disconnected - the trans shifts 1-3-4 on the shifter, so the trans passes the function test.. but the multimeter says my ECU is being a fucker.. no idea why it would want to run both...fuckin!
