Any four stroke engine with an oil pump can be turbocharged. Whether it is worth it or not is another matter entirely.

As I stated initially you really need to define exactly what you are trying to achieve and then see what is the best solution to get you there. Not just a bit more pep. Do you just want better throttle response or do you want more peak power or more area under the curve, how much peak power would you be happy with, how long will that keep you happy for, what are the expected goals long term, what kind of drivability do yo need etc?

I'd suggest that trying to improve the 18RG by any reasonable amount is going to be a lot more costly than getting a far better performing newer engine into the car, at least in terms of performance per dollar spent.

I question this point... Mine is not exactly what you'd call the most aggressive 18R-G, but it's had some work done. Yet the other night i found myself driving home from a mates place in red hills, Famous for... you guessed it... HILLS... and lots of them, however in an attempt to keep the noise down for the sleeping girlfriend, I drove home all the way in 4th gear with revs around 2k (60ish kph)give or take 500rpm and even up the steepest of hills it never struggled a bit... the point is, i think that's pretty damn impressive, you'd have a long way to go before you found any significant driveability issues...

    Hi,

Then it can't be too agressive.

Speak to Lambo about his angry 18R-G. Hated hills and low revs, but once she was on song she was a beauty.

    Hey mate,

I had an 18rg in my celica back in the day, i had it rebuilt with high comp pistons( over 10.0 - 1 can't remember exactly now), big cams, port and polished head, balanced with a very light flywheel, twin webbers, 4-2-1 extractors and 2.25 in exhaust.

It was a good thing - sounded super porn. it could keep new 5L commodores honest in a straight line from a stand still - roll ons on the freeway (my mates old man owned one..) the commodore would slowly pull away. A mates g-tech indicated mid to low 15sec 1/4s.

It was a prick to keep in tune.... i spent a fair bit of cash sorting that motor (around $3500ish from memory) and i already had the webers, and exhaust. cold start was ordinary, but did it all the time once you knew how to do it.

I went for a run in a (poorly running) 1g powered celica, and sold my motor 4 weeks later. For the change over cost of $700 (difference between selling and purchase price) i fitted a 1g to mine.
gained fuel economy (almost 100km per tank) heaps more power every where, and driveability that left the old motor for dead.

If cash was no object, and i could have any number of toys - i would still have that motor in an open wheeler - it was super sweet on full noise - but couldn't compare to the other options for what i wanted to do.

i wouldn't waste your time with efi - either enjoy what is good about what you have. or change to a motor that does what you want much easier.

But everyone skins a cat differently

    cheers

I Agree, but the point is that 4th gear, 2000rpm and 60k's up hills is impressive... you've got a LONG way to go before it's considered undrivable...

And i have to agree with Toy77 regarding the 1G, it's certainly a cheap way to get power and economy (i paid $1000 for my engine/gearbox combo, but alot more to get it running). After i installed my 1G i went from a 350k (highway cruise) range with the 18R-C to 480k's (highway) with the 1G. (figures may not be accurate, they're just what my odometer said)

strewth.. that's alright... my 18R-C was flogged out, hence the reason for the 1G... and those figures are out too... i just revisited them, and the 480k's i got out of the 1G was on a trip from Bundy to Brissy... which apparently is only 370k's so my odometer must have been WAAAAAAAAAAAAY out....
