    Default Solex's need tuning?

    Hi Guys,

Each time I take off in the TA22 Celica it wants to shake and cough. I've currently got a pair of solex's on a 18rg and the local machanic has told me that the solex's are running rich and are making my spark plugs really black, unfortunatly he can't tune it for me (he had a try but they're still not right). He told me to get an ajustable fuel regulator and run it between 3 - 4 psi as well as get it dyno tuned.

I've just bought a holley fuel regulator (not sure if that will help) and will be putting it on this afternoon.

Can anyone make any recommendation or advise me of a good dyno tunner that won't charge me through the roof.

    Thanks in advanced.

There is a thread about various solex issues some where here if you do a search

I would speak with Rodger on here. He is a solex guru.

    Hi,

If the carbs have not been touched and still original, they will need to be rebuilt, as they are around 30yo now. The gaskets would be hard and the whole assembly should be pulled down and rebuilt and then tuned.

Ballpark is around $700-$750 to get them done properly. And when they have been done you'll think you got a new engine.

    Thanks for your advice guys.

Unfortuantly I was told when I bought the car that the Solex's had just been rebuilt by Links in Burwood on Parramatta Road and that they were always left running rich. So I don't really want to pull them apart again.

Can you guys recommend anyone that will tune the Solex's while they are on the car?

unless its something simple like the idle mixture, its not a matter for playing around for 5mins, you need to take your chokes, venturies and (most importantly) jets out, seeing what size they are, then buying new ones which are a better size (what ever size 18r's had from the factory would be good). The carby's most likely need to come off.

Dyno tuning is expensive, most carby places (if not all) do not have the facilities, you have to get it on a dyno your self.
