3sgte cambelt on egde?

hey just want to know how close to the cam belt sits to the front of the pulleys on your 3sgte's it concerns me that mine is right on edge?!

Yeah usually near the edge (about a mm or three from it) it's up to you whether you think it's an issue... if it starts slipping off you got problems! (Or if you still have the timing cover on, then if it starts rubbing against that then u have problems!)

yes i 'm not keen on the belt slipping off, that happened to our RB25 last year and the engine is still in a million pieces!

-no i dont have the cover on either but i'm contemplating making a little guard out of allu.

does yours sit centre on the tensioner too?

mine sits fine on the tensioner.

It could be that whoever last put the belt on didn't line it up very well ... it generally shouldn't move around a lot over time.

If nothing else, the motor is non-interference i.e. if you throw a belt, the valves won't smack into pistons

well i put the belt on last and i followed all the directions in the toyota manual? what adjustments are there?

just push it further back on the pulleys you'll have to undo the tension on it of course.

Only other thing i could suggest is checking if your idler pulleys or tensioner or the cam sprockets *or* the crank pulley is warped (try rolling the idler/crank/tensioner on a FLAT surface, or measure them any otherway u please). They should roll straight and not at an even rate (ie not fast, then slow, then fast, then slow) - i use the same method to check it forks are warped on my motorbike

Of course checking the cam and crank sprockets might not be so easy as they aren't flat

it seems more like a spacing issue? i could space the gears out by 5mm and the tensioner

Dunno why you would need to space them though ? They sit fine on every 3S-GE and 3S-GTE i've ever seen myself ?

Take a pic... mine sits fairly close to the edge and so did my Gen3 so it's probably not much to worry about.
Also the 3SGTE is a non interference engine (like most toyota's) so you won't end up with your engine in a million bits if it slips off... maybe just your timing cover.

That looks ok to me.

Also remember the crankpulley end has a guard to stop the belt working it's way off, and that should also stop the top end from doing the same.
