Or perhaps the 82degC thermo stat was fucked.
while it makes little to no sense, in my 1g ke70, running a 82* degree thermostat, with thermo fans switching at 90/95 i think it was, i would boil the motor and couldnt explain it. did everything i was meant to and still no better.
swapped the thermostat to a 77* and hey presto, it ran right where i wanted it to, thermo fans cut in and out etc etc, no dramas
whether its because it got the water flowing sooner and stopped heat soak, or if it was just because the thermostat opened more/less to get better cooling, i dont know, but it worked, even though by OC's theory it should not have.

it was a new one, and tested fine in water on the stove...

Can you elaborate on this? (just for my own curiosity)Originally Posted by love ke70

put it in a pyrex bowl so you can see.
suspended in the water by wire
start at room temp and gradually heat the water on the stove. Hold a thermometer in the water, not touching bowl, and record when it starts to open and when its fully open.
or if your in a hurry and just wanna know if the bastard is working, boil the kettle, and poor into a bowl and throw the thermostat in, if it opens, then it should be opening before you boil the motor...
hope this helps![]()

Is there any part of the cooling system that is higher then the radiator cap or top radiator hose? Im thinking of air in the system.
in a ke70, the heater tap is always higher than the radiator for some reason.
but i dont think you were asking me, so ill get back in my box

just drill a few little holes in the thermostat little bit of water will always flow through should do the trick lol its cheap thats for sure
that helps for more consistent temps during warmup, and more progressive opening.. but still aint gonna help the total lack of cooling performance.Originally Posted by 1jzmx83
do the TRD stats have a larger open area, when open?

ZZT , i cannot believe that falcon AU fans dont cool your rad.
My mates JZX90 which we put the AU fans on, never even goes past 85 with aircon on on a +35 degree day.... those fans are super awesome.
Id say air in system or modify how early the thermo fans come on.. really normal temp for them to come on should be 85 deg. because once thermo is open , the water in the radiator should be getting cooled by moving air, if your fans are waiting to come on until 90 - 95 deg, then obviously ur shit is gonna hover around 95- 100 on a warm day.
shit, on my 1J with an MA70 radiator, i have a Starlet 82degrees thermostat, once its up to 85 degrees on my gauge, i turn the 1x14" electric thermo fan on , and leave it on until i turn the car off when i get to my destination. my temps vary from 92 to 88
AU fans are good but still dont pull anywhere as much air as the standard toyota clutch or hydro fan .
Also straight 6 engines are harder to cool than shorter engines due to less water flow at the rear cylinders.

In an old 202 yes. But dont 1jz's and the like have water ways desgined to overcome this? Sending water straight from the pump to the rear of the engine via stainless tubes? Or i am totally wrong?Originally Posted by cambelt
Obviously, larger capacity engines need more efficient cooling systems regardless.
