Default Info: W50 vs W5x & R154 Shifter Stick Comparison

Comparison of W50 vs W5x (W55, W57, W58) and R154 Gearbox shifters (This question has come up more than once )

Note: When I write 'W5x' I'm referring to the alloy cased W5x series, in particular W55, W57 and W58 unless otherwise stated.

Note: This information is simply what I have collected in my travels...measurements are approximate and please double check anything that could effect you yourself before relying on it. I take no responsibility for incorrect information (Although I take all care to avoid it).

    Information:
    • W5x (W55, W57, W58) is the same as R154 from the large ball down
    • W50 is different to W58/R154
    • W5x/R154 ID (Internal Diameter) of alloy housing that contains the shifter bush for the large ball to pivot on is ~41mm ID
    • W5x/R154 shifters have slightly different bends / total lengths depending on the vehicle that the gearbox was from. I.e, SA63 Celica is different to RA60 Celica which is slightly different to RT142 Corona. The shifters interchange (as in fit into the gearbox) but as a result the position of the gear knob in relation to the driver may be somewhat varied.
    • The lower (smaller) ball OD is the same on W50 and W5x/R154 shifters, as is the lower nylon bush.

    Key Differences:
    • W50 upper (Larger) ball is ~40mm OD (Outside Diameter) vs W5x/R154 of ~36mm OD
    • W50 shaft length below pivot is ~3mm longer than W5x/R154

I worked this out a couple of years back, and had a 3mm spacer made up to space the shifter up (obvs didn't space the pivot point up though).
But it shifted like ass, so yeah, don't bother.

good info. Need to spread the love tho.

Gives me something to look for to find a W58 stick that will bring the gear knob closer to the driver, so that im not reaching for the stars to change gears in the RA28.

im using the RT142 shifter position, which comes out into the RA28 shifter hole PERFECTLY... but the stick needs more bend towards the rear of the car to make shifting comfortable.

Propane or Mapp gas torch should fix that for you...

That's what I did to my TRD short shifter...
