Did you ever contact TRD/Toyota to ask them?

Negative, I figured after old corollas checked in Japan there probably wouldn't be a lot of info floating around in aussie land. Perhaps a bad assumption?

    OOh Yeah.

OK lets fix this once and for all.

The Toyota Race AE86 used ECU's as shown above and where programmed here in OZ.

The ECU that you have is an Engineering ECU used for Field trial of maps to fix specific problems :

    First image is 2 4AGE Engineering ECU's

Second image is a 3SGE Engineering ECU on the left and a TRD Modified 3SGE ECU on the right

Third imjage is a 4AGE AfterMarket ECU ( 4AGEHouse) with 16 selectable maps and 3 fine tuning controls.

Excuse me if the images do not appear - first go.

    Toyoda.

So they would have been used on test mules for pre production? or on competition cars for fine tuning?

Are they actually any good? Worth hanging onto? Worth cash?

    Nope,

Post production - after a specific problem was identified :

For example : Engine Ping because of poor fuel quality in OZ compared to Japan.

Worth anything - Depends on whether or not you have the suitcase full of preprogrammed ROMS that came with them that had the different maps on them.

Someone should be able to reprogramme the ROMS but you would need extensive knowledge of the systems and the equipment.

i used to have a program that was used to find maps within hex dump with unknown address locations.

it had a 3d graph and you could cycle through blocks until you found something that resembled the fuel map or ign map. etc

dont have it anymore but im sure its on the web, there's a decent sized remapping community/forum, though mainly for nissan ecus, im sure someone from there would be able to help you out.

I have one of these as well. It came with my car - a blue '84 ADM Sprinter with a 7AGE in it. I subsequently blew a hole in the 7A block just in front of the oil filter and the replacement 4AGE I got came with a standard ECU; ( Part numbers are hard to read but the ND part no looks like it might be 175700-0390 and the Toyota part no is probably 89661-12050 but the numbers are more like #####-12#50 with the "#" being the numbers that are almost missing)

Anyway both of the above ECU's run the 4AGE I got to replace the 7AGE. Now that blue sprinter was written off by a bloke who ran a red light into the front left corner.

So I bought another 4AGE Sprinter and the ECU in that is Toyota part no. 89661-12051, ND part no. 175700-0182 and the kicker here is that the two ECU's from above allow the engine to fire up but then it dies like its not getting any fuel...

    Anyway here are some pics - sorry they're all 2048 x 1536:

    anyone know Japanese?

    something like this?

    http://apexology.com/files/schematics/Analyze.exe

it's not 3D, but it color codes each byte so you can easily see tables by the gradual shift in color.

    Interesting pictures

    my translation:

    [Red writing]
    ------------------
    service request
    ------------------
these parts are tentative . because it is a re-structured part

    follow the below service request
    ------------------

    [hand writing]

    3160 k specification ECU

program change parts from Number 1 design E7 (likely toyota internal design department?) <something - possibly person's name> ECU
    [end of handwriting]
    ------------------
The name "Number 1 design E7's ECU" looks like a typical toyota department name but it could be some other engineering company.
