    Hi,

I've been reading bad things about K&N, also as Oldcorolla's mentioned they work good when oiled, but get worse with use.

The foamy like material used in Unifilter seems much like the HKS mushroom filters, I too have read about the material breaking apart as it gets old and being sucked through the turbochargers.

In trucks working in extremely dusty environments I would say they require a bit more attention that in your average street car. Just like any filter they need maintenance whether it be cleaning or replacing. The cleaning and re-oiling kits aren't hard to come by when you get to the stage that you need to maintain them and it's cheaper than getting a new filter (but not as cheap as OEM replacement obviously).

i have a genuine K&N on my car and hate it, it makes a wicked ass sound, but doesnt clean cr#p, i took apart my intake when i first got it and cleaned it all, the entire pipe after the filter was covered in a layer of dust!!!

time to get a new one i guess, or get one of those gay new Calibre's that supercheap sell!

uni filters are useless not to be rude my workshop did a test to find out what they could use on there race car uni filters and the hks mushroom filter let the most dirt through and still wasnt flowing as much as other brands. we found that blitz had the best flow compared to the amound of dirt it stopped. it has also lasted a long time with the proper consideration taken and servicing

there are some good filter reviews out there in Magazine land.

I've seen them in ZOOM, AutoSalon and some Japanese Mag I wouldn't have a clue what it's name is. They each test various aspects from power loss/gain to filtration levels of fine particles. I don't think any have gone as far as measuring a difference in intake vacuum pressure though, which would also be an interesting thing to see when related to the other 2 tests.

I'll have a did around tonight and see what I can find.
I'm pretty sure I remember where they all are.

Does anyone make a very short pod? I can only use something the same size as my death shroom.

The K&N website lists all the dimensions for their filters.

they did it in the paint booth with some black dust not sure how it was done but basically they raised the air pressure on the guns until the dust would go through the filter and so on the blitz filter had the highest air pressure by far and had the least dust ressidue on the test paper on the other side. it was pretty interesting to see the reults

If I understand the method correctly then the Blitz took the most pressure from the gun to force the dust through............so that'll give a reasonable indication of filtering ability but how did you guys come to the conclusion that it flowed the best from that test??

    blitz flows the least?

wait.. so they are using a paper filter on the other side to catch the dust... so paper filter outflows and outfilters the aftermarket ones?

    who woulda thunk

edit: your engine or car will be well rooted before micron sized dust has a noticable effect on your engine.
i say go for the rockstrainer, and hold off on the oil

I think the paper he's referring to was just paper

Pantyhose over the inlet is plenty good enough. Cheap too

It's no wonder there is so much rumour and heresay in the automotive scene about what's good, what's shit and the reasons why when rarely does any workshop or mag do a robust test of anything.

I read a filter comparison somewhere and these have great flow and filtration.

Probably in the mag they quote in the ad?

I bought a wreck with one of these on it and the centre bit on the inner part of the filter was partially detached. That'd be nice to have go through your turbo and engine.

I'd like to see the test but I suspect the 3A unit was a dry element and the others all come pre oiled.

Again though, it raises more questions than it answers
