Supercheap $30 Pod filter

i found a brand new never been touched K&N filter on ebay for 14 dorra and 6 postage..

I with Kyle. As long as you know exactly what filter you need, not hard with online catalogues, you can pick up K & N's on US ebay VERY cheaply. Even factoring in postage, I paid about one third of the cheapest Australian price I could get.

A lot of the places often have a 'make an offer' and seem to act as part clearing houses so they just want stuff gone.

Hey try auto barn i brought my K&N filter there for my celica an was only bout $60 an they have some specials at times so best to wait out then put some cheap ass shit that will kill ur engine.. if u cant afford that then just stick to ur standard filters (which end up costing u more in long term)

today i purchased a K&N filter a decent sized one and it only cost me 110bux.
just save a bit more now and it will save you later

Lots of factory filters do a better job than most think they do, it's typically the inlet and outlets of the filter box that can let down the whole flow thing.

Was told some years ago by a diesel mechanic/fitter I use to work with that a big american mining company did a trial with K&N filters on just their smaller utes/truck because of the cost of replacing OEM filters so often.
Before and after sump oil tests for dirt showed a dramatic increase with the K&N's..........

There may be more to that story, but it did highlight the filtration quality of OEM filters.

Exactly correct Plonka.

I dont see the use of paying so much for a big brand name that wont do the job properly.
I'm after something higher flowing than my standard one. But Plonka, when the oil was checked, how could the dirt be distinguished from things like small small engine metal shavings?

I saw a test on MKIV.com on some big branded filters and some were horrible.

K&N work well when they are oiled.. and then get worse as they get dirty.

large panel OEM style paper filter is as good as you will get or need.. and easier to route cold air to panel filter box.. than a pod.

heck, commonwhore ones (VL? VN?) were like $30 once upon a time... including filter...

Then would it be a better idea to use a big airbox and use a large bell mouth for an inlet?

do you have enough airflow that a large bellmouth would be of use? depends wher eyou are drawing the cold air from i suppose.
main issue is the piping into/out of the boxes are not always so good, and may hav ebaffles to reduce noise...

they can be altered.

anyway, a $30 pod certainly is "supercheap"

Since you probably wont go to the effort of making a pod work properly ie boxing it up, just get an oem paper filter.

I would goto the effort of boxing up a Pod, if I wouldn't I can just mount it infront of the engine bay, but I'd like to find a good pod first.

I only thought that because on a review I saw the Mushroom like filter from HKS was really bad, just makes me believe that there should be cheaper options that will work better. Its just like how there are many manual turbo timers for $100+ from Companies like Turbosmart, etc. Then there is a Turbotech boost controller on ebay for $20 that works wonders.

I've also heard bad things about mushroom filters (they deteriorate and bits of filter end up going into the engine?) but doesn't mean all expensive filters are like that. K&N are a very different design to those mushrooms that look like someone just grabbed a spherical sponge and cut it in half.

The only way I see it is a thick filter will stop as much crap as it can but you will sacrifice a bit of air flow. You could go with something that flows better but odds are it won't neccessarily be able to stop as much of the junk. You can't always have it both ways.

If it's on the cheap as discussed just get an OEM replacement filter, feed some cold air to the stock box and that's about as good as it's gonna get.

the best filter is a replacement K&N panel filter or similar good brand.

I researched this topic a couple years ago and came back with Uni Filter as possibly the most worthwhile after market replacement available. Other then that stick to OEM.

For $30 you should be able to buy a cartoon and gut your cat in a days work and end up with a real performance increase. Obviously a mega dollar fine follows if you get busted AND admit to hollowing it.... lol

But alas I suppose, if your going green, have access to a welder and scope out ebay, you might find a nice new high-flow cat for that kind of money also which you could slot in.
