    Default Turbo Question on 1JZ

Hi guys cleaning out the work shop we came across a Holset HX35W turbo. After a quick google search it looks like these have been used on quite a few different car. Some people are rating them saying there the best second hand turbo you can get (due to price and reliability) and others arent so keen.

It does seem that with the standard exhaust housing the power will be delivered in a massive lump instead of a nice smooth curve. The car it will be used on will be a track car so road driving isnt needed.

I was wondering if anyone had used a Holset turbo or got any opinions on them ?

I don't know anything about the hx35 or its application to gasoline engines from personal experience, but i know holsets are a high quality turbo, they run on cummins diesel engines for hours on end at serious boost levels without any dramas -
What engine are you planning on putting it on?

It will be used on a 1JZ engine, non vvti. Seen someone was looking at doing on another website, will give him a mail to see if he ever went through with it.

    I have a HX35 w/12cm ex.hsg (smallest & non-WG one).
Not installed as yet, but was cheap and brand new, and the map looked good for 400whp on ~20lbs

Bullseye power in the US also do a aftermarket SS 0.63 turbine housing for the HX34 & 40.
Usually used on 4cyl 2.0l engines from what I've seen.

    Cheers for that link.

We've had a rough measure of the A/R and it come out at around 0.8 exhaust side, does that sound about right to you ?

Mines been sitting around for a while so seals may need renewing, but we'll see after we put it on.

I recall something like 0.77 equivalent AR for the 12cm ex.hsg.

I gather you have checked the hsg size? It is printed on the inside of the inlet.
12cm is the smallest(WG & non-WG) and they go up to 16 or 18cm, some H1C's were also "updated" whilst in service with HX35 front covers but still retain bigger non-wastegated turbine housings (19-21cm).

Rebuild kits are cheap, so it is worth a go.

Let me know how you get on if you beat me to it.

I believe it is the 12^cm one i'll double check when i go to the garage next.

If it is, it sounds like it should be an ok turbo for the 1jz, the GT30/GT35 usually use the .7or.8 exhaust housing for around 400-500hp on the engine.

I should be getting a manifold in the next week or so, so i will let you know how it goes. Gotta get the engine in the car and all wired up as well though so could be a month or 2 LoL

usualy turbos designed for diesel engines are great on performance cars, if its cheap try it and if it doesnt work buy a garret, personally with how cheap 35/40's are these days and for how proven they are on a 1j i would go that way myself.

The thing is i cant find any examples on the net of 1jz with them on thats why i was a bit precarious about putting it on.

According to HERE it is from a Iveco.

Which then goes to HERE and only seems to be in spanish.
    Item 5: Ex Hsg 3532299
    Item 6: Turbing Wheel/shaft 3595832
    Item 7: Comp. Wheel 3599649

Just need to cross ref. those part numbers to find the sizes I guess.
The turbine hsg. size is cast into the hsg. just inside the inlet, will no doubt be soot'ed up so give it a clean.
