    Default 18rc floody floody

    Hi All,

i've currently got an 18rc in my 82 hilux and it's flooding like no tomorrow. Basically i can get it started and it will rev up a bit and then idle but after about 10-15 seconds it's struggles and stalls. Looking down into the carbie there is about 1/2cm fuel in there if not more. The engine wasn't being used for about 6 months so i assume something is stuck open or closed from not being used. The float bowl marker at the front shows that it is full to the brim but it used to always sit about half way so i'm guessing it could be the float valve??

The carbie is still sitting on the car so haven't got any pics but can take them if needed. Any help is much appreciated guys/gals!

Yep, you've more or less answered your own question there!

The needle valve will probably be stuck open. You can get at it with the carby still on the car. Pull the filter, then all you need to do is remove the screws (5 or 6 from memory) on the top of the carb. You may need to disconnect the choke linkages, but remove this top plate (being carful of the acc pump plunger), turn it upside down, slide the float pin out of the way, and you can get the valve out with a flat screwdriver. You should be able to unstick the valve to get you going again, but it'll probably be a bit corroded, so replace it when convenient.

    Cheers mate!

i'll have a look at it either tonight or tomorrow night and see what i can accomplish. I've got a spare carby here somewhere that i might be able to pull bits from. If not and the valve corroded any ideas where i could get a new one from???

You can buy new needle and seats from most decent parts stores - Fuelmiser do them. Use the other needle and seat out of your other carb to check this is the problem first too.

alot of the time you wont even need to pull the carby appart. had the same sounding problem with my 308. just try taking the fuel line off at the filter, and blowing through the hose into the carb. mmmm fuel tastes good.

generally it will just be a bit of crap stuck in the needle and seat preventing it from closing fully. hence your fuel pump will just keep filling the bowl up until it overflows.

you can also try clamping the rubber line with multigrips, letting the fuel pressure build up, then unclamp. do this a few times, usually helps dislodge any shit stuck the the seat.

P.S as soon as you start disturbing any gaskets, be prepared for fuel leaks. would suggest you also replace any gaskets you may pull appart.

    Hi,

also sounds like a good idea, worth a shot at least. Are gaskets for these pos's just as available as the valve etc???? That was one thing i was concerned about was disturbing/ripping/funking gaskets that i can't buy.

you probably cant buy em individually, but a complete recon kit doesnt cost that much and has every gasket, o ring etc. that you need, plus needle and seat.

you could kit it yourself, or you could just take it to a carby recon place, they should be able to overhaul and rekit for around the 100 dollar mark, assuming its not a strange exotic import carb of some variety.

Yep, fuelmiser kits are readily available. About $50 from memory, and this includes all gaskets, seals, diaphragms, acc plunger, a new filter and a new needle valve. You will probably be able to find the same kit for cheaper on e-bay.

Bare in mind that if you do just blast the crap out of the valve, the debris will just end up in you float bowl... Then in your acc enrichment jets... You'll be doing yourself a favour to clean the bowl out properly.

yeah if its big crap, its just gonna end up inside the carby anyway, and probably get stuck in the jets.

but it could be enough to get your ride down to the carby place anyway LoLz
