ure timing belt could be over tightend my 1g use to have whine like that and thats what it was although it could be the alternator
Hey guys,
I got a 1GGTE that has a bit of a whining sound, not sure what it is yet, but i was driving it today and got home and realised the sound, it stays there when you rev it and is semi loud on idle, car still drives and boosts fine, doesn't change whether clutch is in or out, i was thinking bushes in alternator? any one else got any other ideas?
Cheers

Yeah spigot bearing noise goes away with clutch pedal disengaged.Originally Posted by Trent-KE30
Spigot bearing only functions as a bearing when the clutch is in...
When the clutch is out, the gearbox input shaft rotates at engine RPM, and hence the spigot bearing does nothing!
Sounds like the alternator is your problem... if it is getting red hot
Otherwise I was going to suggest dropping the belts off the front and putting them back on 1 by 1 until the noise was located

My timing belt was too tight and use to whine while at idle. Try backing it off and see what happends.

stupid question time.... does the pulley for the alt turn at all? can you turn by hand?
red hot is... like... really really bad!! especially if it is the aluminium getting red hot.. cos then a) it needs a shitload of heat, and b) it is near melting point of aluminium....
i'd be pulling that bugger out and taking some pics... oh and then pull apart.
also check the condition of belt.. and see if it is loose or damage or anything.. i'd figure on a replacement anyway....
oh and a pic when rod hot would be nice
do you have any kind of fuse inline with the power wire from battery to the alternator?

Hey OC,
Trent's brother here, I had a look at the car today, the housing itself doesn't get red hot, I think Trent was just exaggarating a bit, we had the car going for around 1 minute today, and the alternator housing gets too hot to touch, I would think that it is not normal for it to do that. We also took the timing cover off, the left cam gear is a little buckled. He does have another alternator lying around we are going to fit and see if it makes any difference.
Cheers OC,

Hey guys, well put another alternator on it and it seemed to fix it. Now as my brother Brad said my exhaust cam gear is buckled like it spins fine but you can see its like shredded the keyway away or something, going to replace it next weekend with adjustable ones + new belt.
thanks all for your help, so if your engine whining its the alternator!!![]()
