OT, but recently the alternator went on the Jack TD.

Holden wanted freaking $1400 for one plus fitting! Yes, that's right, one thousand four hundred dollars!

After a few calls I found a new non-genuine one for $320 plus fitting or a regulator/rectifier unit with brushes for $138 delivered to my door. I took the regulator/rectifier deal. Pulled the alternator out, took the back off, de-soldered the old guts, soldered in the new buts and put it all back together. The job took two hours.

    It pays to shop around.

Normally the windings are pretty good so $350 to supply and fit a couple of bearings and linish the commutator does seem more than a little high.
When I worked Benz (couple of years ago), a rebuild of that nature was around $80 trade, plus the cost of a regulator.
I'm assuming yours runs an external reg? If not, then at least $120 of the price is likely to be for a new voltage reg.
Even so, $230 for the rebuild still sounds high.

Depending on whether it's a Bosch or Nippon Denso one... I tried to replace the Bosch one for my daily magna and copped the same prices... Bosch are apparently stocking less and less parts for auto sparkies to refurb their alternators so the sales of complete units can go up a little... no parts available for mine so choice between $350 for an alternator or $45 for one from wreckers. I lucked out and found one that looked recently refurbed at the wreckers so I got that - new alt would have been more than I paid for the car...

The parts aren't from toyota, the brush pack was UNIPOINT. The regulator was DENSO and the rectifier was TRANSPO. The bearing I used was NSK, the big front bearing was unavailable at the time, I believe it costs $80... it was fine so I re-used it.

I also paid $5 for a bearing retainer from Melb City Toyota along with replacement screws that cost another $5.

I got my parts from Ashdown Ingram, I'd never shopped there before, however I received very good prices and help full service. Simply write down every number that you see on the alternator, armed with that they can supply the parts you need.

    I bought a reco'd one about 1.5-2years ago for $275. $350 seems a bit steep

first look at what the actual problem is. check your connections, put a multimeter (or one of those battery testers) on the battery when the car is running and actually see whether the alternator needs to be reconditioned or if its something simple that you can do yourself in an hour like changing the brushes. mine was reading only 12v when turned on and so i pulled it out and decided to refurb it myself. got the parts (ic regulator and rectifier) from ashdown for $190 and did it in less than an hour total.
