Default W58 Into KE20 Tunnel Mods

    Hi I just bought a W58 to fit to my KE20 that I have a 4AGTE in with a T50 box, I'm using a Niteparts bellhousing.

What I would like to know is what tunnel mods I would have to do to fit this box as I ran a tape over the width of the box and its about 225-230mm and the tunnel is just over 200mm wide (factory auto car), I just would like to hear from other people with KE20's that have this box to see if they gave the tunnel a massage with a hammer or had to do some cuttiing & welding to get it to fit in nice?

Also has anyone reconditioned one of these boxes as I have heard different things from people on where to get rebuild kits a good price.

I appriciate any help you guys can give me.

    Cheers
    Josh

I can't speak for your particular conversion, although the five main methods are:

    (a) if only very minor fouling, use an engineering stick (ie. bash it)
    (b) minor-moderate fouling - modify existing tunnel by cutting out and replacing ay small sections that foul
    (c) modify existing tunnel by splitting straight up the middle, bending to desired size/shape and welding in a plate to join the two
    (d) welding in a whole tunnel out of a larger car
    (e) fabricate a whole new tunnel from scratch
Must.... avoid.... urge... to... upgrade... parts I haven't.... used.... yet.....

    I've got a W58 in my KE25.

The box itself fit with only one spot needing a light tap with a dolly to make room. The bellhousing was a tighter fit but nothing a few more taps with the dolly couldn't fix.

They come pretty close to fitting straight up and just need some light relieving of the tunnel to get the room need so nothing rubs.

Retar/paint and no one would know any mods were even needed.

While you're in the mood for bashing.. i've always wondered how people run a 3" exhaust on a ke20 and keep it a legal height off the ground? I had my gearbox crossmember modded with a scallop out of it, and some significant floor bashing on the passenger side so i could get the exhaust OVER the crossmember..

Could be worth thinking about now, if you haven't done your exhaust already. I don't think mine is excessively low or anything, and my crossmember itself i cannot get my jack under it, let alone having an exhaust under it? It would be on the ground..

I only run a 2.5" exhaust but even so to do the same and run it over the gearbox cross member the the floor pan needed some manipulation to gain the clearance required. I could run mine under the cross member and still be legal height though.

Mines not Maccas or Krispy Kremes spec low though.

what about the shifter position? the 6 speed in my ke20 needs the same tunnel mods but the shifter is way back

for the zorst i mod my gearbox x members so that it sit's right up near the floor and then the pipe run under but right up out of the way.

so there is a moon sape cut out with the open section facing the ground.

    cheers, dan

Depends on which of the 3 (or 4??) W5x shifter positions you gearbox has.

Mine has the hole further back on the tunnel. Simple task to do.

Hi Thanks everyone for all your posts its giving me some good ideas

YLD-16L I have thesame shifter position as you at the very back of the shifter mount and loking at your engine bay pics looks like we have our engines in pretty much the same position so I think my tunnel mods will be about the same

As for exhaust i was going to run my 3" system under the x member but have a scollop in the x- member to aid in the clearnce as i would prefer my exhaust to hit the ground and not my box x memeber

Hurricane what box are you running mate i looked at a S15 6 speed but i thought the shifter was way too far back and they don't seem to be as strong as the W series boxes

    Cheers

I didn't think mine was either? but there is no way an exhaust would be fitting under there and being legal.. Its a modded stock crossmember.

If i recall correctly from my random trawling when reading about CA18 shit, people with S15s and massif power swap out for the 5 speed i think? Being realistic though, its a light car so its not likely to be a problem unless your planning silly power i would have thought?

Is it the s15 box which is the same as is200 and mx5? or am i imagining things?

My shifter is so far back that the crossmember that runs across the floor needed cutting as well

ive got a J160 i think? it is out of a IS300, pritty sure its the same thing as nissian and the mazda ones? im only using it behind a N/A 3t i will be building so i cant see why it will not take 200hp, will be running a W58 behind the 3t turbo though as i plan to run 350 plus HP when its done.

with the shifter position i would also need to to run it in the x member runing under the seats, so i may just sell it or mod the back of the box so the shifter is forward more to were im happy with it.

any ideas on what cars had the w58 shifters forward more?
