Default any one here runs methanol fuel?

anyone here runs methanol on their 1jz? or at least mix of methanol to the petrol?

im not sure whether should i or should i not run pure neat methanol in my 1jz....
being had a very high octane rating it has the advantage of me running alot of timing advance.... however the downside beside the large amount of fuel needed to be spray in will be their own properties to damage engine internals.... unless i flush them off with petrol after every run.....

another option is to do methanol mix.... which is at the mix of 1:5 with our current 97ron petrol.... how does this help to control detonation and im not too sure how i should tune if im runnning a mixture....

reason being taking this option is my small town doesnt have any race gas... only octane boosters.....but instead we have access to methanol... and our pumped gas available is only 92 & 97 ron...

anyone could enlight me ....? if possible do let me knw wat kind of afr should i be running on a mix.... and how much timing advance can i go at 2.2bar..

i think methanol is some pretty nasty stuff, not to be toyed with by backyard mechanics

im not sure how fast, but if you're near an open source it can be absorbed through your skin. decent exposure can make you go blind, and (quite efficiently) even kill you

dunno what sort of exposure you need for it to be particularly harmful/fatal, but id certainly be looking into it if i were you

edit: thought so, have a good read here, specifically the toxicity and safety information

    can you get toluene?
it might give you cancer, but maybe not as masty as methanol could be...

here we are out of option.... theres this race gas with an octane rating of 116 but its very damm expensive.... other than that octane boosters couldnt do much too ....other than this we only have methanol..

i need to solve issues that i had stated above.... could anyone enlight me?

If you're already buying a mix of Methanol and 97, then i'd suggest you invest in a wideband O2 sensor and start looking at exhaust AFRs.

In a nutshell, you'd need a way of easily flushing the fuel system and the curent setup is not conducive to that, some older rubber hoses may fail, you'd need a different fuel+spark tune for methanol & not-methanol as you will use a shitload more volume of methanol compared to petrol.

Instead of a replacement fuel, why not look at a water/methanol injection system (post turbo & cooler). If you do this, change the location of the Intake air sensor to be in the manifold.

my intake air sensor is in my manifold currently..and i do have the dynojet wide band O2 sensor...currently im running tune at 10.5afr with 10% methanol mix with 97ron petrol.however still need guideline if im running 20% mix...methanol injection system isnt available here ... and i have no idea where to get some sort of adjustment system that control....

currently im running 550cc injectors and 4unit of 510cc subjectors.... shoudn't face any issue if happen that i need to spray in more.

    methanol
Good- highly oxygenated fuel, can support bulk horsepower/ignition timing, very forgiving for bad tunes.
Bad- toxic, Illegal for street use, requires serious injector hardware(your set-up would be border line large enough even running both sets of injectors(p.s racers usually use mechanical injection when raunning methanol with flow rates an order of magnitude higher)

Basically its a good fuel for a 100% pure drag car, for anything else its way more headaches than its worth for many reasons. In a street car your going to be much better off running petrol and water water/methanol injection( Just look at horsepowerinabox.com for one of many easily available systems) and a sensible tune with an intercooler, which with an approprate turbo should have no trouble pushing 500+ hp at the engine.
    GA23(never finished-now with cracked block ) JZX83 (Tyre eater) 3sgte AE86. by now i should know better.

Just run E85...from the pump or make up your own with 'relatively' cheap ethanol. 95% the benefits of meth but without most of the nasty side effects.

85% ethanol, with 15% gasoline/petrol... BUT that 15% is not usual pterol, and is formulated to overcome some of ethanols problems, depending on the season/ambient temps.

i would have thought that 100% ethanol was more expensive than 100% methanol.. because 100% ethanol usually has alcohol tax on it? does in aus anyway...

edit: but if it is only denatured with methanol, then it is fine except for the water/acid/rubber problems you get with methanol..

surely it would be easier and cheaper to justbuy 44gal drum of Toluene?

    here http://www.labtech.com.au/store/allprods.php has
absolute alcohol (ethanol) 20L = $78 (lab grade for reactions)
    reactio methanol 20L for $77
ethanol, 200L, 0.5% water, $310 (1.50/L if you have licence or can get it)
    methanol 200L $400 ($2/L)
    Toluene 20L, $95
    xylene 200L, $445

PF has ppl buying toluene for about $70 for 20L ($3.5/L)

as far as adding, you need twice as much methanol as additive and abotu 50%(?) more ethanol..
so on prices above, to replace 1L of petrol, need $4 methanol, $3.5 toluene, $2.25 ethanol..

but given the small gains on 85% ethanol (need to burn abotu 40% more fuel = 0.2Lpetrol, 1.2L ethanol, instead of 1L petrol), and the proven gains from toluene up to 10 or 20%...
toluene seems good.... smaller aditions = cheaper overall (20% toluene = 0.2L)

might wanna look a few posts down on here, regarding octane with additions

can you ask around and see what the cost is for 200L or methanol, ethanol and toluene? and also price of petrol for 200L....

Methanol does cause blindness and insanity, but hey, i played with the stuff everyday for 3 years and im not blind and possible still a tad sain

To mix methanol with fuel you will need a mixing agent, aceton will work. It will not properly mix with petrol otherwise.

Methanol actually has less burn energy or "bang" if you will. Its advantages are mainly its refrigirant nature, its ability to carry oxygen, and its octane rating. Other then that the shit is terrible. It has less lubricity then petrol (ei, no good for your bores or valvs seats), much harder to atomise then petrol and will rot your rubber lines and fuel pump in no time.

Generally mechanical pumps such as waterman or enderle pumps are used with methanol. Im not sure what the indy cars are running tho?

It really isnt a practical exercise for a street driven car. You are best buying a 20 litre of toloul/toluene from a paint supply place or similar and mixing that with your fuel.

you can buy an aquamist injection system online and get it delivered there no probs. Then you would only be using a small amount of water and meth.

I use toluene and like it also. Cheap and works well. Only 30% mix. Unsure if you can get it there though?

methanol price here for 200L is RM 1150. (local currency of malaysia)around AUD400 plus ...

i tink i can get acetone.... how does it help and at wat AFR and should i aim for in those mixture?
