Shifter position is SA63 by the looks of it.
Not sure on the ratio's sorry, but i know there were also some steel sandwich plated w55's made.
Possibly someone had a w58, behind a 3rz, using the sa63 shifter posi??![]()
Hi all,
Today I recieved gearbox from ebay which is claimed to be a W58. I have checked the ratios in first against a spare hilux gearbox which I assume would be a W56 and the W58 was about 3.5:1 in first and the W56 was around about 4:1 in first.
So I was thinking that everything was ok and I had a W58 with a steel sandwhich plate.
I then checked the bellhousing against my 3rz->W56 bellhousing and it is basically identical as far as I can see.
Could anyone shed some light on this? Do the w series gearboxes use the same bellhousings for different engines or have I been ripped off![]()
Any help appreciated
The gearbox on the right of the top two pics is the W58.

agreed with pure, shifter position is SA63 which would make it a W55 or 57
do a quick search and you'll find the ratios for the W55 or 57 and u can confirm it with the box you have
the ratios is the only way you can tell the difference between W55 / 57 / 58
i have personally seen and owned a steel sandwitch W55 and a alloy sandwitched W58
thats the problem when it comes to people who cant tell the difference, when selling they will assume its the most expensive/sought after of the gearboxes (not to mention ive seen W50's being referred to as supra turbo boxes lol)
- ma61 + 2jz-gte + v160 + 3.5 torsen
Well then, I've got three 'supra turbo' boxes for sale at $200 a popOriginally Posted by rob

As Rob has stated, gear ratios are the only way to tell them apart.
Check 1st, then check 5th.
And make sure its accurate within 0.1:1, if not more accurate.
Turn it at least 10 times to make sure.

thanks guys,
I'm still stumped with the bellhousing, is the 3rz bellhousing the only one that's the same shape or do other toyota z engine codes fit it or something? Only reason I ask is that the guy didn't have a hilux.
Also, my hilux gearbox has a steel sandwhich plate so does it really mean anything at all?
Would that be just as strong as my overpriced ebay piece of shit?
I'll do some ratio tests in the next couple of days and I suppose go from there
Oh yeah, I forgot to add that the box was used behing a 1uz but the fella sent me the bellhousing that came with the box so that's why I'm thinking the bellhousing might have more than one application.

Steel plate just means its post ~1988.
Whether the Hilux boxes share the same bearings and input shaft as the Supra boxes I don't think anyone has tested. I doubt they are different though.
Around the edge of the bellhousing (where it mates to the engine, but on the edge where the bolt heads are) should be a very faint stamp of the engine family it matches. (M, Y, R, S, RZ, G, etc)
Have a look for that, and yes it is hard to find.
I'm not aware of the RZ engine sharing the same bellhousing pattern of any other Toyota, but I've never looked into it.
If you find out let us know.

20+ year old gearbox...
Who knows what is in its history, a swapped shifter position and bellhousing (both quite possible) and it is hard to identify
Check the ratios and that will tell you 100% for sure what you have!
Not that hard, and you can stop the hand waving / guessing
My thoughts
Cheers
Wilbo
No worries,
I'll do some ratio checks and let everybody know.
Too right wilbo, nobody likes hand waving/guessing!
Ok, so I haven't got round to checking the ratios yet but I had a bit of a look at the bellhousing as Cruzida suggested and found this,
Sorry about the terrible samsung shot but to me it looks like 2K? Does that sound right to anybody?
It will be 2RZ
