Just play with its positioning until its happy.
This all started with the Setting Idle Speed thread and I have stuffed up big time now and the car is undriveable. Wife is very unhappy, at say the least!
The story so far:
Took off ISCV and gave it a good clean out (not very dirty) and refitted it.
Took off the TPS for a look, saw a big butterfly wing nut underneath, though oh yeah, and put it back on.
Now the car revs from 1250 to 1850 over and over again.
Took the TPS off again and turned the wing nut by hand, fully open, fully closed a few times.
I'm sure I had it fully closed when I put the TPS back on.
Now the car will idle without hunting but as soon as I touch the throttle, it hunts from 1000 to 3000 rpm, over and over again.
I don't have the TPS setting spec's for my 1G-GZE and I have lent my feeler gauges to someone years ago and have forgotten who.
Can someone please help, I have effed up badly here and can't drive the car. Stupidity...![]()

Yeah, unfortunately, I'm with Peewee, just play with it till it's happy. You should be able to put the TPS back on with barely any force on the butterfly at all (read: SFA).

goto the tech manuals on the toymods site, get the specs for resetting the TPS, youll need a spark plug gapping tool or similar and a multimeter to read the voltages.

Opinions are like assholes, everybodys got one.
heres a link to the settings seeing as the tech files seem to have dissapeared...
http://aarc.epnet.com/application/8827/8827.htm
and its also a link to the pinout on the TPS
go to "driveability and emissions controls" then select "electronic engine controls" and hit the "TPS" link scroll down for the 4AGE settings to the two boxes marked "resistance between terminals" and "TPS resistance"
To access the pinout go to "removal and installation" select "except 198891......" and toggle across for the image.

Hmmm, thanks guys this has been very helpful.
Peewee, JCMF.
1st problem I have is that I am tensioning the throttle butterfly when I put the TPS on, so I will rip it off again and try something different!
Michael,
I have a 1G-GZE manual but its in Japanese, and for the series one engine, and does not seem to list the TPS pin-out and the test measurements.
That link you posted is excellent, but the problem I have is that the pin-out don't match - its only on the bottom two I get any reading, and that is 80 Ohm, which seems well less than what I should be getting....
Thanks for your help guys.
Mitch.

Nothing should be under tension when you put it together.
I think you'd done what JCMF did.
Unplug the TPS with the car running, and see if the revs fly up to 3000rpm.
If they do, then you have put the TPS on incorrectly.

Good point.
I reckon I have done exactly what JCMF has done,
I did unplug it while running and there was no change in revs, but I have been tweaking it a little in the last few hours.
But I have fitted it with tension on the butterfly. I'm going to take it off now and replace the screws with allen keys as the bottom one is a bitch to get to, and buy some new feeler gauges while I am at it.
Thanks for all your help everyone.

the feeler guage method for adjusting a TPS is all but fundamentally uselss. good in theory, shit in execution.
install, run and adjust. got it right? disconnect the battery for 5 mins, and on restart, se if she stays in tune...

I think I am chasing my tail here.
While I was looking closer I found that the throttle lever was not closing on the stop screw, only on the dash pot. It was about 3mm clear of the stop screw - and yet there was a yellow paint dot on the screw and its mounting plate...WTF? I have removed the cable that pulls the throttle shut, its working off the spring only. Have I made it worse by not adjusting the stop screw first?

The decel dashpot is a stand-alone manual unit without ECU control or vacuum connection, so I pushed it in by hand expecting the throttle level to come to rest on the stop screw, and it doesn't. There is still a 1mm or so of gap between the two, so its the length of the throttle cable that is the problem.

Disconnecting the throttle cable will determine if it is the cause.
Hope you work it out soon

oh i love this thread!
i may be able to get my TPS working correctly nowthankyou all!

Throttle cable unhooked from the pedal, dashpot lever pushed in, no change, still a 1mm gap between throttle level and stop screw. I'm beginning to think that the dashpot will never move out far enough to cushion the lever when the throttle is snapped shut.
I'm not keen to adjust the stop screw as it is marked up with yellow paint and the car was working fine before I started changing things to 'improve' it...
I hope so too thanks mate, work tomorrow and having to take the kids to before and after school activities makes the car a necessity...Originally Posted by CrUZida

The throttle plate should be 100% closed at rest.
Take off the intake pipe and have a look.
If its not 100% closed, then it work idle properly.
