    Default off the shelf intakes

    Hi all,

I have been searching long and hard for an off the shelf cold air or short ram intake for an AE92 SX, i have been able to find this k&n setup http://www.knfilters.com/search/prod...x?Prod=57-0115 and that is all.

the only thing is it dosent seem like this will replace the whole system from the throttle body.

what do you guys have installed, or does anybody know who will make a decent custom system in sydney, that will not require me to sell my left kidney to buy?

    thanks,

    Adrian.

SRI is useless, just sucks in heat from the engine bay. Better off going for a full CAI, common practice is to either run flex-pipe (basically ag-pipe without the holes) or an alloy tube through a hole in the front guard to a pod-filter mounted behind the front bumper - like this (yes, I know it's a 7AFE and an AE102, but the principle is the same).

Or, keep the standard airbox and panel filter setup (maybe go to a K&N panel), and then run flexpipe to the same CAI place behind the bumper. Alloy tube is the way to go, should only require one bend so is relatively cheap, and the flex-pipe option is even cheaper.

normally you can get the pod filter adaptor which has the hole for the afm which will just sit in and take care of that side of it, only problem is that probably wouldnt have enough give in the wiring to extend it right down like in that picture.

Could always go with stock airbox and high flow filter, and the cut a whole in the bottom of the box and run a CAI tube into the box from the front bar

i got more response + dyno hp from stock airbox, K&N panel filter, then the ducting to bottom of car or front bar... my understanding is that the sensor going into the airbox is for idle up.. and being AE92sx, i'm assuming you've got a 4A-G, in which case a lot of people seem to run without the sensor and it's fine... i prefer it in beacuse it bumps up the idle when it should..

you wouldn't really need a new system from throttle body as the stock system is good enough for decent airflow.. just block off the resonance boxes along the intake (i just used duct tape inside the box so it still looks original), K&N panel filter, and ducting to front bar / bottom of car..

Fixed. Only 4AGEs in Australia with AFM are early bigport GZEs and silvertop 20vs.

And if you look carefully in the picture of my intake, you can see the air-temp sensor has been reconnected to the intake piping, about 20cm down from the join to the flex-pipe. It's right at the limit of how far the cable can stretch, but it still attaches fine, and the rubber bung was included so that there aren't any leaks.

to make a decent replacement intake pipe for a 16V smallport SX you need to also fabricate a flange to house the idle-up valve that usually bolts to the top-half of the airbox. The 16V smallport intake air temp sensor is easy to fit in an aftermarket pipe, just need the correct size hole drilled.

Does the valve actually plug into the airbox or just have vacuum hose running to it like the bigport ones? If so, just bolt it to a convenient hole in the strut tower (always seems to be a spare one there)

Or do what I did with the air-con idle up valve in the 102 and just cable-tie it to the strut brace.

the valve is built into a section that bolts to the airbox.

Hard to see in this pic, but it's the box-looking part that has the blue plug on it.

Yeah, definitely different to the 82 one, which slots into the side of the airbox but pulls through vacuum hoses instead.

Hi Im new to all this modding performance work, just wanted to know if you could give me a heads up on doing the following

    "
Or, keep the standard airbox and panel filter setup (maybe go to a K&N panel), and then run flexpipe to the same CAI place behind the bumper. Alloy tube is the way to go, should only require one bend so is relatively cheap, and the flex-pipe option is even cheaper."

I've ordered the K&N panel filter, but how do I do the whole flexpipe thing and from where?

    Cheers

You can cut a hold in the bottom of the airbox or open the existing hole up. Then either cut a hole below the box and feed cold air to that, or feed cold air to the existing induction pipe which runs in behind the guard.

BTW, on mine the flex pipe that attaches to the throttle had worn through at the flex join so check yours while your there.
