Default Roll cages in NSW - NCOP, ANDRA and CAMS info

    Hi There All,

Recently i have been looking into a cage for my celica, aimed mostly towards drag racing. And i have posted various info in a couple of threads - but thought it may be worthy to put it together here for easy reference and additions etc....

Firstly - in my members ride thread there was a bit of discussion as to what ANDRA required in a cage. Mainly differences between weld in and bolt it....

this is taken from my members rides thread -

"I have the current 2008 official andra rule book here.. and i quote - section 4.4.7 Roll bars/cage

"Street registered cars with a fixed steel roof and unmodified monocoque construction running between 10.00 and 10.99 1/4 and less than 140mph

Single rollover hoop covering the full width of the drivers compartment with 2 bolted backstays and a bolted side intrusion bar constructed to ANDRA requirements as a minimum. (figure1, figure 3)."

faster than that requires 6 point with different rules to the bolt on stays etc...

When you get to the "notes on sedan rollover protection"
under the heading "mounting points" it states and i quote

"mounting points not compatible in strength with the roll bar material should be reinforced with steel plate of at least 56sqcm, welded OR using 4 10mm bolts"

The book has all the dimensions for the materials in mild or chromemoly as well as how the bolted joints on the cage must be fastened.

I interpret those rules as saying a bolt in cage is fine - where it joins to the car, if weaker than roll bar material (like floors or wheel arces made from thin steel) it must be plated and can be bolted or welded."

So this looked all good - until i called BOND roll bars - who were very helpful i must add.
Although they were advertised in the andra rule book right below the regulations - they dont do andra cages.
They do a celica bolt in cage, but it doesn't meet andra specs - it is fine for cams and fia i think....
The problem revolved around the brackets. the ones they used are not approved by andra, they did do some andra ones, but dont believe they are safe enough so will not produce them....... they were happy to sell me their bolt in cage without brackets, to do my own brackets or weld in myself....

I also spoke to my engineer up here in Newy....

    this is from another thread.....

"for what it is worth, i spoke to my engineer (who is on the rta list) less than a week ago concerning cages.

The NCOP is not in force in NSW and there is no date set to start.

He ran me through thte rules concerning cages with all the drawings for minimum clearances.

He called and argued and won with the rta about 6 point cages. they were claiming they were not alowed. the regulation says "not recomended for street registered vehicles"

The constraints are very difficult to comply to. the front bars must not impede you vision from a set adjustment on the seat. this means the cage must be different from left to right, because yu dont sit in the middle of the car, your perspective is different.
Also rear vision mirror and sun visor operation must not be affected.
As well as complying to clearance rules. often the roof is within the distance (which is ok, cos it is factory) but cant put in a cage there.

I decided better of it. will go 4 point instead."

My engineer also sent me this email and a pdf file with these drawings fromt the RTA guidelines...

    "Hi Stewart.
I've attached the pdf. It's not a regulation as such, but a few pagesfrom the RTA's code of practice for light vehicle modifications. Note that the proposed national code of practice for light vehiclemodification (available online at www.infrastructure.gov.au) will notpermit 6 point cages at all. We have no indication of if and when theRTA will adopt it - I hope that they don't because it's a dogs breakfast..."

Please feel free to discuss this or add your own thoughts or experiences.
This is just what i have gathered in recent times - i may have mis interpreted things at some point - so do not take this as gospel - but worthy of consideration.

And as with anything like this discuss with an engineer before making any decisions!

    Cheers

i dont know why bond advertise in the andra book when they dotn do andra cages,i found them to be complete wankers.

ring JP fabrications ont eh central coast, they did paul mckees cage in his his ra28.

honestly stue, i woudl go welded in intrusion bar, and rear stays, have the rear stays bolt in if you must, and have a bolt in intrusion, you wont have issue with the RTA with this. Jeff does them nice so you cant really se the main hoop., hell you couldnt even tell i had a roll cage till i did the front legs to make it 6 point.

    Hey mate,

i hope the silly season has been good to you and your family...

i was actually gunna give you a dial when i was ready to go to see who did yours - i remembered they were down the coast.

I think i will need a bolt in intrusion to get through engineering - depending on where andra says it has to go.

As for the rear - i dont care what they do.... it wont have any reason to come out. the reason i was lookin bolt in was the cost and ease of fitting. sounds like a good place to start....

    cheers

bolt in is more expensive as you have to use andra approved celivises and they are like $85 each join.

go weld in main hoop and rear stays with bolt in instrusion, he will make a plate to go on the under side for strength. im sure he is away for another week, im waiting to get an engine containment devie made and to put a funny car cage in the cressida.

from memory my half cage with bolt in intrusion was like $1300
