Default late model 4age external oil drain, Are they neccessary?

In the haste and excitment of fitting a worked bigport head to my late 4agze block, I completly forgot that the early heads did not have the external oil drain at the back of the head, so I now have a useless drain into the block.
How important is this oil drain? Is it neccessary for a an engine that is going to get flogged, or is it one of those toyota over-engineered things which is nice to have, but not completely needed?

I figure i was just gonna cap it off for now, and wait till the head has to come off again for whatever reason, and just drill a new drain into the back of the head...

    CHeers for your thoughts

just block it off or use it as a breather.....

i think you should be able to get away with not using it

Yeah its one of those things.
Its better to use it as it is there for a reason but not a major thing to not use it.
You may have probs with extended hi rpm thrashings as the 4a tends to pump all the oil up into the head.
I dont use it on my engine.

Dont use the block fitting as a breather !!!! They force oil out that side as it is the side the crank throws oil up on!

Yeh only the late ones have it due to the oil pooling up in the back right corner of the engine (or in rwd case the back left). They didnt have them on early model 4a's so im guessing theyve found a little too much oil getting stuck there and gone and put a big pipe in.

As mentioned above it should be right but it might be a good idea to drill a drain hole when you get a chance.

Btw how would u find out if the oil is pooling up in there?

Yeah it does .......... but i found out the HARD way When my enginebay was covered in a nice new clean film of oil (about 1ltr) after my oil/air can filled up and spewed oil everywhere !!.

That required complete dissasembly to get the Eng bay back up to scratch.

not really needed, check out a 20v they got rid of them so i may have just been 100kw heads that need it. i used a 20v short with a 100kw head with no dramas in my ae71 before i went gen3 3sgte . just blocked the head side off

I dont think that the 20v neded one because of the head design relating to the way the oil pooled in the head.

A 16v is prone to filling the head up with oil with extended hi rpm but a 20v has better oil drainage as far as the head design goes and it wasnt needed.

It's only really necessary for sustained high RPM use, I've seen Sprinter rally cars with a nice oil haze behind them at the end of a stage, but that's the only time I've ever seen a need for the drain.
Strange things are afoot at the circle K
