either way mate, its farked, the impella, if its come free should be sitting behind it, too big to go anywhere in the galleries.....
Well we fired up the 2JZ again last night to a nice flapping from the fanbelt. Stupid piece of crap water pump failed.
Now has anyone ever seen one fail like this:
Basically its walked its way forward on the spindle, the shaft and all.
What im wondering is whether the impeller will still be attached to the shaft or if it will be floating somewhere else in the water galleries forcing me to pull down the lot![]()

Yeah, my guess would be that the impella is still in one piece, just sitting there watching the shaft spin nearby. Could have failed in a worse way... either catastropically or even silently.
Those water pumps are a total cnut to get out. I did mine with the engine out (mid-conversion) and it was a PITA then. I can't imagine how much fun it'll be with the engine in the car. Good luck.

has the shaft walked forward too?
what would cause it to move like that? is one of th eother pulleys on an angle?
or the bearings in the water pump failed?
what i mean is, unless something failed and caused an angle, there is no force trying to pull the pulley forwards.... so you need to fidn that too
good luck!

Good point. Normally the belt would tend to want to keep all the pulley wheels in a single plane. UNLESS... the waterpump pulley has failed in such a way that the shaft has angled downwards slightly and so the tension on the belt has resulted in a component of forward force.Originally Posted by oldcorollas

Nah, bearing has failed. I noticed that the pump pulley was on a bit of an angle, but i kind of ignored it, until we fired it up on Friday and it walked its way forward.

Nope, no bearing failure. I suspect rather that the car had at one point sustained a front end impact and knocked the water pump pulley mounting plate thingy out of alignment.
When i tapped the plate to knock the pump off the backing it did this:
Can see its slightly ovalised too:
