    Default Custom water/oil heat exchanger

I have in my possession a water over oil heat exchanger off a 5SFE engine (Camry) which sits inbetween the block and the oil filter that would normally have some of the cooling system water running through it. I wanted to install this on my 20V because it seems to have the following advantages over a traditional oil cooler:

no messy/bulky oil lines, although it would have water lines they would be at the back of the engine out of the way.
heats up the oil when the engine is warming up
    compact
    tempreture controlled by engine thermostat

All this considered though I had a good look at this heat exchanger and while its a clever design and has a great surface area for the water to transfer heat, on the oil side of it is quite a different story. The oil comes straight out of the block through the threaded pipe into the oil filter so nothing happens there, this cant be changed but on the return there is a short section where it passes through the heat exchanger and it has a bit of a ribbed section, in my eyes its crap all surface area to transfer the heat to/from the oil.

I want to stick with the idea but I just dont think the 5SFE part cuts the mustard so what i am thinking seeing I have been mill happy lately is to make my own heat exchanger up. I am thinking of making the main part out of two blocks of aluminium that clamps together. The engine coolant would flow around the outside in a zigzag shape and the oil coming back from the filter would possibly have to pass through a multitude of small drilled holes, this would then let me have a decent surface area in small space.

Can anyone pick any holes in anything I have proposed above?

cant help with your design sorry, but the diahatsu feroza HD-E engine runs the same style oil cooler. maybe a trip to the wreckers might find you one to compare....

a number of the hilux vehicles use one. i was thinking of using one from a 3rzfe, this hwoever does require the use of a D2 filter as they are a larger OD so you will still be looking at oil filter relocation anyway.

oh right, I would really like to keep the filter where it is.

I would be using the original through bolt from 5SFE so I inevitably will use the same thickness of around 50mm.

but if you were to reloact the filter you would just be looking at two hoses and then a larger filter mount plate to sandwich the d2 filter onto. certainly easier in terms of hoses then a relocation, cooler and thermostat assembly

look up "laminova" in google - lots of race teams use these as oil coolers in much the fashion you describe.

You can buy the extrusion and cores individually from eastern race parts and some other race oriented parts suppliers.

Have a look at a WRX unit, they use the same gadget but it might be built better.

In the world I work in cost never really comes into the equation...

The outer housing is $150 for a 1m length. The cores are $400 for a 330mm length. We then machine it to take our own dash fittings, and machine up ends to suit. Then you need to seal kits at $35.00 each. I suspect we dont get much change from $800!

It is probably cheaper to buy the off the shelf kit, but we like to do things the hard way
