5MGE is a nice twincam... good motor. 5ME is a wretched single overhead cam motor. About 50hp at the flywheel difference in favour of the 5MGE.

I hope it's really cheap, possible BHG, no w58, no LSD and paint job needed unless you were planning on that rat rod style in the end anyway.

If you want the box and lsd are you better saving the pennies and getting something a lot closer to what you want with a better motor as well? Fixing and upgrading can add up pretty quickly especially with fuel and breakages once you start driving something regularly.

In my case cheap has worked out OK most of the time.
However looking over the threads it seems starting too far from where you want to finish can cost more money and frustration along the way.

Not trying to dump on you. Some of the best lessons on how to fix stuff I got were just doing it on my early cars. You do have a lot of experience available on Toymods and some pretty amazing cars/people over your way that I didn't have available.

Either way I'll be looking out for your members ride, as I'm sure you'll have one here sometime. It's good to see you asking questions before you get into something too deep to get out cheaply.

    answer number 2.

call repco, ask them if the head gasket is the same for a 84 celica supra MA61 with a 5M-E, and a 88 cressida, MX73 with a 5M-GE..

    and you have your answer

i just rang up repco and veales.. and NO.. the head gasket is differetn for the 5M-E and the 5M-GE.. one is 290 bucks, the other is 349.. and they are completely different part numbers.. one is like xx309.. the other is xx403 or something along those lines.. sorry i didnt' write the part number down, but yea the 5M-E one has to be ordered, but 5M-GE one is available

5me head gasket is NOT the same as 5mge.

5me has a timing chain, and the head gasket extends around the front of the engine to seal the timing chain area.

this sounds really familiar.... (like it could be my old shitter MA61....). its not white, auto, aus delivered with a 5MGE conversion, rusted to shit hatch (wasnt that way when i had it though), light tan carpet (great nick, not worn), retrimmed door panels, and a supra 2.8i decal down the side is it? there aren't many with 5MGE conversions running round in perth thats all.

off memory the only thing wrong with that car was the BHG when i sold it. motor was running beautifully, auto box shifted fine too.

dude regarding head skimming. take it to Head Torque in osborne park. $100 is what they charged me to acid dip, skim, check tolerances etc on my 1J head. all you need to do is take the cams off.. they'll take the buckets/lifters out for you no prob.

The W57 doesnt bother me much since it wont be transfering much more than standard power, but the only reason why i want the 58 is because its better and used more in Toyotas, which means parts would become easier to come across.

LSD doesnt bother me much either.... but u can never beat controlled drift, as opposed to open diff drifto!

the car is only is only going to be classified as a 'daily driver' for the moment so it doesnt bother me that it doesnt have BULK power!

Something will be going in that members ride section SOON, how soon i dunno buy yea.

No, its Joorsh's old 2JZGTE MA61 with Petes 5MGE and W57 in it.

And YES it DOES have an LSD (unless its been swapped out recently) but its probably worn out.

And the W57 is 99.9% as good as the W58.

yea asked the guy 2day, said it was an open diff, dunno if he swapped it, or if he was unaware of it being a LSD.

good news, no water in the oil, no white smoke exhaust, just steam from back of the rocker cover???

......man after hearing a bit about this car, it has history, as said before, it had a 2jz in it, before that was the std 5M-E, now it has a 5M-GE!

its been around a few times!

cheers for looking, will updated this thread more when it is in my hands, sometime next weekend!!
