I had no luck with 'off the shelf' 5MGE profiles about 6 years ago when I was looking.
But any grinder will be able to do what you ask of them.

The 5M-GE engines are a little built animal really. I know Graham Wilkins used to build a couple for racing and from memory the cams were done by Camtech - Ask for Malcolm.

The Late (digital) 5M-GE makes a ggod deal more power than the early (analogue) 5M-GE so if your looking for power options I'd suggest updating the ecu and loom etc to the Digital 5M-GE. The easiest donnor car will of course be the MX73 Cressida with the 5M-GE. The 5M-GE from the crown is also the later model but the loom for it is incorporated intothe car unlike the engine loom in the cressida that comes out quite easily.

I still have allot of 5M-GE stuff boxed up in storage icluding spare ECU's and I think I still have a complete spare loom. Unfortunalt I threw out the 3 Spare heads when we had the last clean up.

    Cheers for the info ppl.

I have ended up using all the bits from the 2nd engine I bought, as it is a newer model 5MGE
I will be keeping the dual pulley setup, as I just modified a nice big flacon alternator to suit my setup.
Measured up the 2 sets of cams, there is virtually no difference that I can gather, just some parts are worn more then others.
I will be using the newer cams, with my original rockers & lifters (as they are in better condition).

I am tempted to swap the wiring over, Is there much involved in the exchange?
(other then the new ECU / Loom)
I do have a complete ecu to engine loom left over, but have not looked to see if the ecu to car side is the same.
May have to contact the guy I bought the engine off, see if he has the ECU too...

What sort of power difference is there between the dig / alog systems?
One of the annoying things I used to have problems with was a surge right between idle and slight acceleration,.
I frigged with the TPS, which improved it some what, but not 100%.
I am guessing the newer ECU / TPS would be much smoother, being a proper continuous control type.

    Thanks for the input!

the later model 5mge is a dream to drive, although i don't have an early 5mge to compare to, the 22re/5m-e with similar electronics, you can tell the difference. I made 90rwkw and 100rwkw on different dynos with mine when it was running.

On paper it may be a big difference but in reality theres not a huge gain . ive had both and 6MG,s on both systems . and to be honest i even used a 5ME efi system on some customers jobs with great results . And if you see the AFM sizes between the 5ME and the analog 5MGE you strangle it using the 5ME one,

    Quick update,

Just picked up all my goodies from the engine shop.
Heads pressure tested ok, all nice and cleaned up.
Block / Head had a few thou taken off, look almost new now
    Crank ground & pollished.

Should have the bottom end back together this weekend,
I still need to do some port work on the head & intake runners.
Also picked up a set of new injector seals from united injection.

Will take pix tomorrow, as I am stuck on late shift tonight :|

    Righty.

Got some-what busy on the weekend with assembly,
The head cleaned up very nice (despite corrosion in galleries).

Block came up very nice too, gave it an aluminium upgrade….

However on assembly of the bearings I encountered a couple of problems.
#1 One of the main bearings is oversize (width) by about 2.8mm & the tang location is reversed.
May be for an older model M engine, which had a larger centre main.
#2 All the big end bearing had mismatched tangs

    Solution.
Grind out new tang locators & Re drill new oil holes in offending parts.
I can’t see this being a problem, tangs now match up correctly.

Bottom end assembled, everything looks & feels sweet.
Will start on the port matching / cleaning during the week.

Nice looking head and block! Combustion chambers look like new. Really digging the alloy paint on the block.

    Morning,

    Another quick update,
Started work on the inlet runners yesterday.
    Came out like so:

Removed about 1mm of material, to match inlet ports.
Still need a final clean up.

    Ok
Been a busy few weeks, bit it’s finally all together, Whoo!

While the engine was out I also fixed up a few other bits n pieces, including
upgrading alternator, replaced power steering pump bearing & seal.
Replaced gearbox rear seal, still need to get hold of a new W?? series lower shifter boot.
Any one know where to buy them / have one laying around?

Have also made a few changes to the wiring & thermo fans, (fans are from an old pulsar).

Should be back in the car by this evening if all goes well.

    ^^ Agreed ^^
an nice electric blue or red with polished raised sections would look perfect.

Great to see someone having a go with a 5MGE. A great looking engine that has always lived in the shadows.
