about $140 - $180. most good auto elecs will have one on the shelf, if not you need to leave it there for half a day or so.
For a 4A-GE alternator, how much would you expect to pay for a complete overhaul?

Ben...
hmm, overhaul....
dismantle alt and take armature to auto elec to machine slip rings if they need it.
buy new front bearing and fit. (can't be very expensive, and is often not changed during reco)
buy new brushes and fit (like $5-10)
reassemble...
.......
Profit
(edit, i think my last alt overhaul was like $30 in parts..... plus another $50 or so to change the built in reg)

I am in the same boat and will go to REPCO tomorrow to buy brushes. Any other place to buy them?? Mine is a Denso Toyota original one.
On hot days it works while on cold days it gives up ( Due to expansion and contraction I believe). Also If I play with wires on Alternator it work even in cold...
i usually just go to the local old bloke auto elec... they are (hopefully) more likely to have a range of bits on the shelf to check... but brushes are pretty much standardised nowadays..within brands...
while it is out, check the solder joints btwen the coils and field diodes etc.. look for cracks...

it's funny how you can pay sooo much for somethings becuase people either don't know or don't have the time to check it out, while the auto elec's and mechanics laught all the way to the bank
my auto elect (not named) just bought about 300 alternators for $10 each, reco's them for about $5-$10 each then sells em for $200 straight out the door. why didn't i think of that first!?!
