Screwdriver and hammer. Use it like a cold chisel on the outer ring of the filter and tap it and it will slowly spin until its loose enough to grab and turn by hand.
I've dumped the oil from my 1G-GTE, and been trying to get the oil filter off, but absolutely no love. Tried using a filter wrench, no way it can even move in the cramped space that's there, tried using sandpaper to grip it, can only get access from underneath to my large ham-fists and can't seem to get enough leverage the *un-do* way due to awkward angle. I'm not sure if there's anything else I can try, heard old jeans floated, same with slipknot, I'm gonna try old jeans, but don't know how to tie a slip-knot, so bit stuck there.
Anyway, wondering if anyone's got an suggestions, or if there's anyone out Box Hill way who'd be willing to drop 'round and have a go for a sixpack or something, or even just any more tips, or sometihng. Otherwise I'm just gonna put the oil in, and either drive it to a workshop and ask 'em to have a go, but I doubt a normal workshop is gonna be able to get it off for the cheapo price? Else if someone has experience at getting oil filter's off 1G's in the x8 chassis, I could swing a slab your way or something if I can head 'round your place and you can give me a demonstration of how to get the oil filter off or something?
I'm just stuck, and wanna get my car up and running again, got a shitty excel I'm driving, but it's like a clown car, knees around my ears and it's killing me![]()

I'll try, but I dunno whether I have enough room to move a hammer at all
I'll report back soon with hopefully good news![]()
filter socket ftw

First time I had to get a stuck oil filter off, I took a 10mm drill bit and put a nice neat hole radially through the filter, near the end so that I didn't hit the fitting. Inserted jack handle into said hole, and then cracked it about 10 degrees. Had to repeat until it was loose enough to undo by hand, but it worked.
The filter was in a bit of a sorry state afterwards though

what's a filter socket? and would there be any room for it in a gx? there's no room for a filter wrench or similar.
And I just tried the hammer + screwdriver method, and it's not budging. The access is pretty hard, there's not much maneuvring space either, I'll take a picture. I'm trying to find a large-headed small length screwdriver atm, in an effort to get a decent approach, but don't wanna just punch a hole in the filter.
That's awesome. I'd try that, but I don't wanna be stuck with an unusable filter, with holes in it, still stuck to the car :O I'll save that 'til lastOriginally Posted by Hiro
Can the filter just rip/tear and you end up with a mangled mass of metal attached to the filter thread thing?
I suppose it could, but then you could use pliers or something.Originally Posted by hecate

That's the kinda access I'm getting (that view is underneath the car, lying at the front where I am, and taking pictures back to the view I have, sump is the black thing bottom left corner) (If someone can't see the filter, I can highlight it in paint for you with a nice red circle, but it's the black thing with the jap characters on it)
If you can get the car down to moorabbin then i could swap it over for you at my factory, but in all honesty, get ur self an appropriate tool (iv'e found the claw type oil filter tools work best on the 1g's) and just attack it and dont take no for an answer-youll get it off pretty quickly
p.s whats with all the 1g oil filter drams recently?

I find the genuine SST filter sockets the easiest way to remove stuck genuine filters...
~$30-40 from the toyota spares department, I've got one for both the D and E size filters now.
They let you use a 3/8" ratchet or ring spanner to get leverage on the filter.
I've been meaning to buy the set from ebay that covers all the aftermarket filters like ryco and purolator too, it's about $100 for that set.

I'm not sure how well that'd work, given the lack of manouvring room.Originally Posted by JP
I'm going to fill the car back up with oil, and try and get the oili filter off, then as soon as I do, it's oil change time againThere's no problem with pulling the oil filter off while there's oil still in the sump 'cept that oil'll spray everywhere? I'll just make sure there's a pan underneath or something.

I'll go grab one of the claw-type tools and have a go, and if I still can't get it boogie-ing with me, I might take you up on that offer. Not sure how, bt I'll work it out![]()
is the 1ggte in a z20? if so get yourself one of those metal oil filter removers that tighten themselves up as u pull down.
I tried the geniune toyota ones but without a small enough ratchet/breaker bar its pretty damn hard.
otherwise get one of those long ass screwdrivers poke a hole in it and turn little by little until u can get it off with your hand.

nah, gx81. I've gotta filter wrench thing like this:
http://images.google.com.au/imgres?i...icial%26sa%3DN
but there's not enough room to move with it, I can get it on, but can't move it to even get it to tighten, let alone unscrew it once it's tightened.
